I played it on my 52 inch LCD TV and it looks darn good, I used a apple tv and converted the .mov file to a mp4 in visualhub. This converted the file to 10mb h.264. Wonder if the camera has different file formats and compression settings?

To play the files correctly with VLC...

Download the latest from videolan.org and do the following:

H.264 codecs are pretty CPU intensive and VLC can't use multi-cores to decode it yet.

1. Open Tools/ Preferences
2. Click Show settings = All
3. Go to "Input/Codecs
4. Go to "Other codecs/ FFmpeg" subcategory
5. Set "Skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding" to ALL
6. Restart VLC

if you have powerdvd 7 or 8 and a somewhat more recent graphics card that has FULL h.264 HW decoding you can play it on almost any CPU. For whatever reason, either .mov header bug that QT ignores, or some new header than only QT understands yet or powerdvd bug there is no audio though.

quicktime doesn't appear to take advantage of any HW accel on windows machines and it basically it's on eo fmy least favorite and worst performing multimedia players. it does play the audio though.

anyway on socket 939 AMD 4400+ X2 with QT it is really choppy
with powerdvd it is smooth as silk (I do have one of the latest ATI cards that happens to have full h.264 decoding, I think any nvidia 8800 or higher so long as not the 640MB 8800 version has full h.264 decoding as do the 2 newest ATIs and I think their previous generation too)

there are some videocards out there now in under $100 range that have the full 5.264 HW decoding, so if you use a decent program and not quicktime junk, it'll be silky smooth and not even get your cpu above 20% usage.

The full clips play with slight pauses/hiccups in the motion on a 2.33 GHz iMac C2D. This is most visible in the clip in which the male lead walks across the frame from left to right. However, converting it to 1080i rather than 1080p allowed it to play smoothly on the same computer. Converting to 720p also allowed smooth playback.

Thanks, this makes it run smoothly on my quad core machine

I do see all cores being used when I play the vid though.

Mine is only 70 MHz slower... and I'm seeing slight hiccups on the clip I mentioned above. Put up your Movie Inspector window during playback and see if you get the full 30 fps during playback. Mine's fluctuating between 24 and 27 fps. When I convert the clip to 1080i, I get 30 fps.

my 2.4 ghz quad core computer with 4 gigs of ram plays those videos smoothly! i use quicktime btw.
and for my taste they look incredibly good coming from a camera that is supposed to 'only take photos'.

The key to playing back smooth H.264 is a codec which offloads some of the processing to the video card. The higher end Macs all have as part of Quicktime, but you need to pay some attention to your choice of codec and video card to get the same on a PC.

My MacBook Pro plays the clips back fine, but my Dell XPS desktop doesn't come close despite having a faster processor, cache and bus. If I end up editing a lot of H.264, I am going to upgrade my video card to one which supports H.264 decoding.

Not a problem at all on a macbook pro. You may have noticed in the "making of" video what they were using to edit.

Probably something wrong with your configuration. I just played the helio clip full screen in QT on my 23" Cinema Display and it was smooth and beautiful--not a single hiccup. Damn that was good! Well, the sound suked. And I'm running a 2004 Apple G4 Duo (1.25GHz x 2) with ATI 9600 & only 2GB RAM. I haven't tried it on my MacBook Pro (2.2GHz CoreDuo) but it's never had problems with HD content.

you can also reduce the file size and not notice a huge reduction in quality. This video is 1920x1080, you can convert it in Quicktime pro ($20) to around 1280x720 HD h.264 and it will look just as good on your moniter and play easier.

Actually, there probably isn't anything wrong with Beni's config. See below.

There's no way in heck a Dual 1.25 G4 could handle those full-res clips without serious stuttering/frame drops. So the H.264 decoding must be offloaded to the ATI 9600 on that box.

I haven't tried it on my MacBook Pro (2.2GHz CoreDuo) but it's never had problems with HD content.

It will have problems with these clips, if the video card doesn't do H.264. A 2.2 GHz CoreDuo doesn't have quite enough power to decode these clips at the full 30 fps.

It's gotta be the video card, then. Mine has the NVIDIA 7600 GT. I'm guessing yours has one of the newer ATI cards that does hardware decoding of h.264.
