The thing I like about the Leica S2 is that it doesn't have the built in grip of the Canon xDs.

As far as price goes, some working photographers rent the right camera for each the job. And some working photographers own Medium Format Digitals.

The 3x2 format is the same as 35mm and the new Leaf 48x56 chip. Lots of people like this format.

No, some sort of wierd studio camera. May be the same mount though as it appears that the S1 could use SLR-oriented lenses.

scanning back, tethered operation only. Pretty high tech for 1998 actually.

Vaporware? The pics look like extremely early mockups. Has anyone heard anything about a release date or more details such as the viewing system, SLR or not, etc? I bet this camera is 2 years away from actual production and then, only if Leica is, of course, still around. Not that I could ever buy one anyway, but I would love to be wrong about that.

It's very encouraging that Phase One is on board with Leica.

I love how they rushed the translation so much they called it "middle format" instead of medium format

Anyways, kudos to Leica for being innovative. Will cost an arm and a leg but should stir up the MFDB segment which has only been bleh for the last 3+ years.

I have not heard any numbers yet regarding the viewfinder. What is the magnification? Is it 100% coverage? Leica themselves call it just "excellent". It just does not seem possible to provide a huge, high magnification, 100% coverage in that smallish body for a format larger than 35mm. Heck, just look at how big the viewfinder on the new Sony A900 is. So, what did they do, how did they do it and where are the specifics. If this camera will be shipping in January, just 4mo from now, they should be able to give us things like FPS, viewfinder specifics, etc. That's what does not quite make sense to me and why I doubt this camera will show up so soon. It just seems like Leica is being a little Vague on specifics.

I think it is a brilliant move. Not only is this system a professional's dream come true, the other products will be able to piggyback on the interest this will generate. The M8-2, a much more capable camera than its detractors will have us believe and a niche product without competition, a future R10, which will be a more conventional high-end DSLR utilizing incomparable lenses. I think Leica has positioned itself right in the forefront of the photographic world, a place where it belongs historically speaking..
