I have a 40D, 28-135, 85/1.8 and 50/1.4 lens that I'd like to take with me most of the time. I'm thinking I need a 5 MDH, but wanted to make sure I couldn't get away with a 4 MDH. I'd rather lean towards too small over too big, especially when I carry a diaper bag with me everywhere too!
I can fit a 30D w/ grip, 100/2, 50/1.4, 35/2, 580exII laid flat in the bottom, and a film body. + accessories in a 6MDH confortably.
and If I repack it right, I can fit a 70-200/2.8 Sigma in as well if I leave the film body out.
The problem for me with the xxD bodies in a 4MDH was the width (front to back) - it was tight, so the camera didn't slide in and out easily, it was more of a two hand operation to hold it open and slide (jam) the camera in. Very compact though.
5MDH is as small as I would go, even if just one lens as posted above.
6MDH is not that much bigger, and you get a lot more versatility. I've owned the 3-7 mdh, I kept the 6.

What if I don't have a grip? I want to go as small as possible, but be able to get the camera out easily and fast. I am just afraid the 6 MDH might be too big (especially for a 5'1" female).
Just got my 5MDH - it's pretty tight with my 40D with an 85/1.8 on it, 28-135 and 50/1.4 stored on the sides. I love it's small size, but it's quite tight. Now I have to decide if I should return it and get the 6MDH... decisions, decisions!
I have a 6 and love it. It carries a ton, but if I choose not to carry everything, it's still totally manageable. I've been dragging it all over Europe the last week and love it more than ever.
