I'm surprised we haven't seen at least one basic review by some site as yet, now that the camera is available. It's hard to believe that they haven't had a sample for some time.

They would have had pre-production cameras, so those results would not have been reliable. DPReview, Galbraith, and others have confirmed in the past that Canon doesn't get production cameras to them any more quickly than real customers get them.

Welcome back to the fold, Greg! Hey .... look at the 5D II this way - in terms of IQ it's at least as good as the 1Ds Mk III which is twice the price (with no HD video) .... and I doubt very much if you will see a significant or any difference between the files of the 5D II and the $8,000 D3X .... which does not even have a self-cleaning sensor, much less an HD video!

Thanks a lot bobbytan, I ordered the 5D II again

Of course I reserve the right to cancel my order...

Well, I wonder if there is a connection with the falling price of the D700, which fell to $2399 on Amazon.com today.

Mel Gross wrote:
Well guys, it's official, the D3x will be shipping in a few weeks.

Guess the price:

$7999.99 in the US!

Canadians will be happy to see that the price there will be CDN $9449.95, so they can stop complaining about Canon's pricing differences.

Now we can stop also complaining the 1Ds is overpriced.

Interestingly, the specs look more like Sony's than Nikons. up to 1600 ISO, with special settings to 6400. 5 FPS at 24.4 MP, with 7 at 10 MP (that seems low).

I received a call from OneCall (Huppins) on Tuesday before Thanksgiving asking me if I still wanted my 5D Mark II ( I was # 13 on their Pre-Order List) as they would be shipping it on Friday, 11/28.
I told them "No" because I was #9 on JR Music's Pre-Order List and thought since I was on East Coast I would get it quicker from JR.
But, I have not heard anything from JR.

To those who've received calls from their retailer about their MKII, are you getting a kit or just the body?

I placed my preorder for a body and was fourth in line.. but theyve been told that they'll only be receiving kits on the first delivery. So I'm wondering if this is the case for others out there. I really dont want to buy the kit, but willing to do so if there arent retailers out there selling the body only.

I posted an earlier piece from him, but hadn't seen this one yet.

WELL!

He's not too happy, is he? He says almost exactly what I've been saying all along, in a more general way.

People here should really read this. not to value MY views, but because for those who think that Canon has screwed the pooth, it can be seen that Nikon has done so, but even more often, and worse.

Things are really getting interesting, aren't they?

This means that whatever Canon does do will be mitigated by the reaction to the D3x, which from this article, doesn't look as though it will be good. Also, it's interesting to have confirmed what my old clients have been telling me, which is that the D3 ain't doing too well.

I'm not saying the 5D2 isn't better, but look at the magnification of the items in the images. The items are much bigger in the 5D2 shot. That makes this comparison worse than useless: thoroughly misleading.

Not only that, the OP failed to point out an obvious flaw in the 5D2--it does not register cats! I wonder if it is just domestic cats that don't show, or is it any animals of the feline variety.

That's a very interesting article of Thom Hogan indeed.
Like you said, it confirms "the grass is always greener".

And what suprised me most was that the D3 isn't doing very well in sales. Is he (Thom) right about this? With all the discussions here on the Canon forums I got the impression the D3 was doing very well.

Found a place in NYC that has a couple mk2's IN STOCK. Both kits and bodies at regular retail prices (meaning no excessive markup - $2699 for the body, etc).

If it werent for the fact that it would take 5-7 business days for me to get my deposit back from another local retailer, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

I keep in touch with a number of my old clients from when I ran my lab. No, it doesn't seem to be doing too well. I've been told by more than one, that they were disappointed in the resolution of the D2, and that the D700 suits the needs of most pro's.

With all the criticism of Canon's pricing and feature policies, it seems that Nikon's way of doing it with the D3/700 is hurting them badly.

I know that some people want top features in a much less expensive body, but it's not a good way to market a line. Too many D700 sales are killing the sales of the D3, which isn't a good thing. it just hurts the bottom line of the company, which impacts their R&D as well as future models.

Now, they are trying to make up for it with this high pricing. Considering that the only difference is a higher pixel count sensor, with poorer specs in the noise and dynamic departments (otherwise, why would the ISO limits be so much less?), as well as in the fps specs, what are photogs getting for $3000 more? Thom is wondering about that with no good answer. That's why it's a bad idea to have the same bodies at wildly different pricing, or the same specs at wildly different pricing.

Canon will be looking at this very closely, we can be sure. As the 5D mkII pre-sales are so much higher than they expected, they can now relax.

I think we can too.

Let's not jump the gun. Nikon is not so stupid as to put out an $8,000 body that is not better than their $5,000 D3. I am sure it will be better than the D3. The question is, how much better .... and will it be significantly better than the 1Ds Mk III? My guess is it will be very good. And the target market that Nikon has identified (commercial, advertising, fashion, and all those who require MF quality) are very real indeed i.e. these pros DO want a DSLR that can delivery digital MF quality.

According to the published specs, and from what Thom says, as well as Galbraith, it's the same body, with just the sensor, and processing module being different. A few minor menu changes round up the differences.

I seem to remember a larger company making a bad marketing decision not too long ago. Maybe the pressure is on. I don't know whether either company can see the green for the trees or they are just choosing the wrong clubs. The 5D mkII should at least bring Canon within putting distance. Just how close to the hole we shall have to see.

It's a legit shop, I've gone there numerous times on my lunch break and have purchased lenses from them before. It's a real deal camera store, not one of the warehouse bait and switch places in Brooklyn or Naroibi

But whatever, it's probably best if you go in person since there are alot of us here from NYC. It's on 51st and Lexington - inbetween Sports Authority (I think) and Jamba Juice. Ask for Reggie, but anyone there should be able to assist.

I hope it's night and day better than the 1Ds Mark III, otherwise Canon won't have any reason to sell it, or the Mark IV, at a more reasonable price point.

Well I just called them up and ordered a body only. They had 2 left, well, 1 now. But still have the 24-105 kits as well. Shipping tomorrow so should have it Wednesday. Figure since I work in the city if they don't deliver I can pay them a visit. ;-p
