I am seriously considering the Dawntech Pro GPS receiver for use with my D300. Looks good. Any comments?

Two things I do not know (actually there are a lot more!!!). What software do I need to transfer the EXIF GPS data to something like Google Earth? Also How can I transfer locations to my EXIF data? What I mean is I have pictures of a trip and know where they were taken and can go to that point on Google Earth. Is there an easier/better way to transfer the location data by software or do I have to physically note the lat & Long. and type in my EXIF file?

Hi.

I have one which I use with my D300. I did not get any of their software, however, so I can't speak to that. I use Lightroom to import my files and just click on the GPS part of the metadata and Google Earth opens. I do believe Nikon is making a GPS unit also -- you may want to investigate that also.

I have one and use it on my D200 and D3. The GPS data is embedded in the picture and if you have opanda installed you can just right click on the image and map it on google maps. I've read somewhere that you can use picasa to view the pictures and open it in google earth through that.

I guess I will go ahead with the Dawntech unit. It looks like a good system and with a 10 pin out also allows for a timer etc. i do not think the Nikon one has an access and I am not sure it records the universal time as well.
The only thing left is to find an easy way to tag my existing pictures.

If you are a Mac user, the Google map facility is built into Preview.app. Select GPS from the options, then press the LOCATE button.

Also, I have the Dawntech pro model and it works great.

I got the Solmeta GPS (DP-GPSN2). When I was looking, I chose the SolMeta since it also embeds directional data (ie. where my camera is facing when taking the picture), and had a feature that keeps the GPS data even if the satellite signal was lost.

A nice bonus is that it also came with a remote shutter, and a little CD with some freeware/shareware utilities (ie. PhotoJet Studio) that can make a custom website with your pictures.

Yes, I am also seriouly recommending Solmeta N2. It can record the gps information right the time when taking a photo with some bonus, heading, indoor gps fix and internal independent battery.

I just bought a D90, with the GPS capability in mind. Does the Solmeta GPS connect only with a 10-pin plug, which I don't seem to have on the D90? If not does anybody know if there's anything standard about the D90 "GPS" port? Hopefully this isn't a racket to try to force users to buy Nikon's $1000 GPS when more economical options can be found.
