this is my experience as well...
acquisition seems relatively slow on the D3, compared to the F5.... when I use an AF lens (non-AF-S) I really have the impression that the F5 is much faster.
And like I said in the beginning, I am still not convinced by the D3/D300 AF system, counter intuitive, no group dynamic... sometimes the slower AF of the D200 gives me more keepers thanks to the group dynamic, and for sports I see what I am doing, not really the case with the D3. Don't misunderstand me, the AF on the D3 is excellent but not as excellent as some people think on paper. If the subject does not fill the picture (and covers a lot of sensors), the AF is lost.

Hi Guy. I am interested in your experience, can you explain it a little bit more particularly the statement "...nd for sports I see what I am doing, not really the case with the D3" as I don't understand what you mean.
I am also curious to understand why you see the lack of group dynamic (GD) as an issue. I use GD all the time on the D2 Series, but I find the Dynamic Area with 9 points on the D3 to effectively work the same. Not trying to disagree with you I just want to better understand your point of view.
I have no view on the F5 anymore as I sold mine. The only observation that I would make is that I find the D3 to be more accurate than the D2 series in its focus acquisition in certain circumstances. In the D2 series if the subject was not large with respect to the focus sensor it sometimes would focus on the wrong part of the image.
I find tracking in the D3 dynamic area mode to be excellent, and for what I do I don't see any difference with the D2's in this regard. I am far from sold on the 3D focus tracking. I have yet to get satisfactory results with it.
