p.1 #1 · Film and slide scanning information needed

My mother has a ton of slides in carousels, as well as lots of old family photos - negatives and prints. I started thinking it would be a nice gift to scan them for her. I know she must have a few hundred slides and at least that many photos - let's say 500 total of both. I looked at the price of some services offered by some small operations here (about $0.50/slide) and I thought I might be able to do as well by doing it myself and then selling the scanner when I was done.

I was hoping some kind souls out there who had done this before might have some advice as to how to proceed, what to expect, and what someone - not a pro - ought to need ? I have looked over the specs of the Coolscan 5000 as someone was selling one here. My initial thought was it was overkill - did I really need 4000 DPI ? - until I realized I might be scanning negatives or slides. It was also more expensive than I had naively hoped to pay. If I could get something that would save me some time, that would be great, but on the other hand I don't want to be spending more than I need to.

With about 500 slides and photos - does it make sense to do this myself ? What should someone like me be looking for in a scanner ? What features would make this go faster, how long should I estimate this to take and what might my space requirements look like ?

Thanks in advance for any advice !

It takes a lot of time and a lot of storage space. I have a Coolscan 3000 and TIFFs are over 50 Mb each, and if you use JPGs you had to convert using another program because Nikon didn't include that option, so Photoshop or something similar is needed, and more time is used converting & saving. For me it wasn't too big a task because my computer and the scanner are in the same room as the TV, so one at a time I waited while enjoying TV. I would assign a certain number to do eash night and eventually finished what I wanted to convert. It's been a while since doing the bulk of them but 20-30 per evening was about all I would try to do.
