My two-bits worth of idle speculation: it won't be a rangefinder. Nikon's expertise and major market is in the SLR arena, and they're still #2 to Canon in many business metrics. From where I sit in the consumer space (and without knowing everything they know), it would appear to be a distraction, a division of resources, and a loss of focus to enter a whole new market. So I think that, whatever they create, they're going to put it into an SLR.
I also note that Nikon outshone Canon these last two years with announcements of killer products, so something to take the 1Ds3 on directly, and make it look bad, is what I'd expect. Just like the D3 made high-ISO news and made 25,600 usable, having Nikon leapfrog Canon's 21MP with a 30+ MP sensor would not be a surprise. That they'd go as far as 41MP, while also adding sensor area to create the "MX" sensor size definition, would be a great surprise (great as in large, and great as in good).
