Vaporware. I'll believe it when it is announced officially. IF it's announced officially.

Gizmodo, rangefinder, medium format.... my head just exploded.

Man that'd be weird. The Mamiya 6 was beautiful, if that's the direction they're taking that'd be too cool for school.

This was on nikonrumors.com and its an interesting read. I wouldn't mind the competetion and the choice of having that camera at my reach. Is it possible to use our FX/DX lenses on that or is physics against that possibility?

WOW seems like Nikon is trying to do everything. Maybe just to piss off the Canon folks!

Cool.

Can't wait to also hear about the 8 lenses they're going to release with it. Or maybe we just have to put a hole in the body cap and use it as a 41MP digital pin hole camera.

A few months back I heard they were going to develop a new MF rangefinder camera working with Leica. Both Leica and Nikon would have their own version of the camera and the mount would be Leica to take advantage of their existing lens lineup. Nikon would then build up their own collection of lenses as time went on.

Last I checked Sony R&D was not involved in the D3. That's Nikons baby.

It's now an established fact though. Canon is the dark side.

If Nikon decides to go MF format I'll say **** all y'all and jump on the Canon ship. With Mamiya, Hassy and Phase one, I think the current modular MF systems are doing a great job. Focus on 35mm, then worry about the rest when you make it perfect.

That seems fishy to me. Why would Nikon waste such effort on a losing proposition out of the blue? I'd rather see a digital 35Ti or similar zoom.

Well, this Canon user would be very excited to see a 40 megapixel Nikon rangefinder. Forget this brand loyalty nonsense. This could be a great product from a great company, and, assuming it's not too absurdly expensive, I would certainly be interested in using one.

At least get your facts straight about who developed the FX sensor.

If Sony's doing all the R&D, why don't the Sony versions match the IQ of the Nikon's? The A700 (which uses a variant of the D300 & D90 sensors) can't match the D300 in IQ, especially at high ISO's. Sure the Sensor is a Sony, but all the rest of the R&D is Nikon's.

D3's also a Nikon-designed sensor.

A sensor is useless without all the supporting chips doing image processing. You can have the best sensor on the planet but if your chipset around it doing all the image processing is crap you will get bad images. Which is what seems to happen with Sony and Nikon.

Just like with computer motherboards and memory that can kill the performance of a CPU, if they are badly designed.

They're better than most of the Canons too. So are the flashes, and the wireless built-in flash commander, and the build, and the ergonomics, and the... oh, never mind. You don't have a clue.

If you're too stupid to realize that competition is good for you, and you're fat-dumb-and-happy enough to think that we're still in the 1980's where competitors don't sometimes collaborate for mutual gain and opportunity, then you go ahead and stick your head in the sand... the rest of us will be out taking pictures with whatever tools we need to do it best.

One from my D300 with the Sony sensor for you...

I have also heard the rumors but in the form of a 45 megapixels sensor. The rumor I heard was about a medium format camera to compete with digital Hasselblad.
I do not know if the sensor will be placed in a rangefinder camera.
I guess we will have to wait.

My two-bits worth of idle speculation: it won't be a rangefinder. Nikon's expertise and major market is in the SLR arena, and they're still #2 to Canon in many business metrics. From where I sit in the consumer space (and without knowing everything they know), it would appear to be a distraction, a division of resources, and a loss of focus to enter a whole new market. So I think that, whatever they create, they're going to put it into an SLR.

I also note that Nikon outshone Canon these last two years with announcements of killer products, so something to take the 1Ds3 on directly, and make it look bad, is what I'd expect. Just like the D3 made high-ISO news and made 25,600 usable, having Nikon leapfrog Canon's 21MP with a 30+ MP sensor would not be a surprise. That they'd go as far as 41MP, while also adding sensor area to create the "MX" sensor size definition, would be a great surprise (great as in large, and great as in good).
