It doesn't. I believe the construction of ZE was, as it's OP admitted, purely wishful thinking.

It's in the banner, with an empty hole where a ZE lens should be, next to an ad that says something to the effect of "Want to know about ZE? Be the first to find out by signing up for our newsletter."

Which I did. I'm curious to see what fills that hole.

Zeiss doesn't seem to have many lenses yet even for the F mount.

ZE was unveiled over the weekend. The new lenses are *definitely* "ZE" - but right now it's still a guess if that means "EF" or "EOS." We can only hope...

What else could the ZE designation mean?

From the Zeiss website :

ZF: F Bayonet Mount supported
ZK: K Bayonet Mount supported
ZS: M42 Screw Mount supported

If we play the "there's a grain of truth in every rumor" game, the Canon DSLR rebadged as Leica rumor would make sense if there were ZE lenses and Leica EF lenses...

Yeah, funny, except that this was posted on the Zeiss site *after* my post here. The initial speculation about it being ZE was - at that time - just that: speculation!

Still not too bad. 1400 euros is about the going price for a CZ. You get AE thrown in for free, no adapter costs, and maybe ) MAYBE) DxO will give us a module for distortion correction.

It's going to be pretty interesting to see how folks respond to the 85/1.4, since it's coming in at about the same price as the excellent Canon 85L.

The new 21 has an extra element which maybe for distortion control? New lens is larger and heavier than old lens.

The ZE support all metering modes, ETLL II, and have AF confirm chip. If they support electronic aperture control as well we couldn't have really asked for more.

The extra element might suggest a complete redesign to comply with RoHS (or whatever it's called for glass :d). The classic 21 might be gone as we know it, but then again knowing Zeiss, they might just pull it off.
