p.1 #1 · #308 -Jewelry Box.

This is an old jewelry box we've had laying around the house for some time now. Not sure on just how old, but seems pretty old.

Hi Ken,

I love the texture of the box and this latch is very cool. I find the shot a bit soft, however. In checking the EXIF data a couple of things may be making it a bit soft. If you didn't use a tripod, then you shutter speed is probably too slow (1/8 of a second). In fact, if this is handheld you have a very steady hand for it to even come out this clear. Even if you did you a tripod, however, there is likely to be a bit of diffraction setting in at f/16 on a crop sensor camera. If you can shoot it again at f/11 from a tripod I think the image will significantly improve. I hope this helps. Good luck this week,

Steve S.

Steve- It just so happens that I also shot it at f/10, so I will look at that one and see if it's any better. I shot it at a pretty big angle, because I didn't think it looked right straight on. I focused on the right rivit of the latch and tried to get as much in focus as I could (that's why the high f stop.) Maybe I'll also try it head-on again and see if that works. Thanks for your input.

One thing to remember with these entries is that there is a maximum of 640 res on the longest side. Therefore, when shooting a shot like this you can stand way the hell back and shot wide--giving the object all the DoF it needs. Then simply crop tight and you should still have plenty of wasted resolution left over for the resize.

Nice shot by the way, I do like this angle.
