p.1 #1 · Christina Make up shot

Hey guys, can you give me your honest opinion on the make up? I did it in photoshop but I don't know if I went overboard. I was not happy with the make up at the shoot so I wanted to try my hand at it. What do you think?

too much, I like the first pic. Maybe if you tried half this amount.....? I would not have guessed that you PS'd the make up, so good job there.

Thanks! What a great compliment.

it looks a little hard on the edges, which give it that digital feel, try a gaussian blur on the makeup layer, that will soften up the edges and make it seem more blended and natural.

I think you'll have a better effect if you straighten the brows , reduce the bumps, take out the lines. You'll want to blend the makeup further too. Remember to think about the weight of the make up where it pushes the eyes too, and of course the hands and arms have to be adjusted accordingly.
Her face could be quite nice with with dark make up but the width of the shoulders, hands are overpowering.
The make up person actually did quite well. Usually it's best to add in PP as you are doing.

Somehow I actually like what you did with her lips post-photoshop.

it's a bit overdone (not terribly), but try turning down the opacity a bit and see what that gets you.

Only mildly overdone, cut it back just a tad and perfect.

Too far. Eyes are very captivating in the first shot and become too dark in the second. Try 1/3 to 1/2 the application.

Like others said, it's a bit too much. I don't really like the "raccoon eyes" it gives her.

I may not have the popular opinion here but, I kinda like the second one, it reminds my of the "heroin chic" look popular in the early 90's fashion, not sure if that's what you want to hear...

Of course totally depends on the use of the shot, fashion type shots often use over the top makeup.

I think you did a great job. If it's a standard portrait, I'd tone it down a bit.

On the right track, just a bit too much. It looks a little fake, but if it was done with real makeup, it would almost be like what the Egyptian pictures look like.

Every once and a while I like to play around with an image other than mine.

I hope you don't mind. Here is a quick attempt at layers and masks to correct some minor things.

^^^ For a quick attempt, I like that a lot.

The iris color looks good too.

I don't mind at all. It looks good Neil. Thank you! I should have stated the context of the shoot beforehand. It was supposed to be a fashion/beauty type shot, not a portrait session. I shot this during the lingerie shoot I did with her. Thanks for the input everyone. I did look back at the photo after intentionally avoiding it for a couple of days and I also think it was a bit much. Not by much, but yes a bit heavy. It just wanted to see if I could do it. The last time I tried to apply make up digitally it was a disaster. I intentionally avoided it until now. Believe it or not what got me to try it again was a youtube video. You know those videos that fly past you at 10X their normal rate. I felt like a bit of a fool trying to decipher what was flying past the screen and pausing while I tried it myself. It was surprising how much I liked it though. I guess my a.d.d. came in useful for once!

Ok you have to tell us how you did this. Looks like Jody has some KILLER photoshop skills. Kudos to you...now..

The glossy look to her skin (nice because you didn't smear away detail) gives it a great studio look. I asume you pulled on a tone curve in photoshop...but would you mind helping us and explain your method a bit.

Thanks!

Yeah. And the hair too. I always have problem with editing stray hairs and their background.

I gotta tell you, I think it looks really bad.

Nevermind the ridiculous apocalyptic background.

The glossy skin looks like she's sweating under those nuclear holocaust clouds.

The skin tone looks like she got a spray-on tan... Or radiation burn, given that sky.

Her lips look like she's been sucking on a cherry lollipop while waiting for the bomb to drop.

She looks like she's wearing color contacts.

And lastly, that eye shadow is REALLY bad. The color is gross, and no one draws eyeshadow on. It's brushed on. Therefore it would not have clearly defined edges like that.

Neil's example looks WAAAAAY better and realistic, and he probably spent half the time on it.

Editing this took me 10 mins,

Jealousy rears its ugly head. Seriously, dude. Did someone crap in your cornflakes this morning?

Here is a photo from your website with clearly defined edges on her eye shadow. I noticed it also had some pretty bad shine, well, really blown out whites on the left side of her face.

People in glass houses......
