p.4 #1 · Canon 5DII rumors thread

The 5D currently already has 15point AF -

What it really needs to compete with the D700: PRICE PRICE PRICE. That's all that matters. You sell a FF camera even with the current 5D specs but mark it down to $1500, you will have a real winner.

It's not the feature set that Canon has trouble with - in fact, I will say they can trump Nikon's D3/700 combo with a new 5DMK2 spec wise - however, Canon has a huge problem and that problem is giving consumers features for a low price. It's pure greed factor and it shows:

20D ->30D (minor improvements).
30D ->40D (minor improvements).
40D ->50D (better improvements).

They can sell a FF camera at $1700 and it will still sell very well. But I will be the first one to tell you they will not and watch how the new 5D successor will be priced HIGHER than the Nikon D700 - I would guesstimate if those above specs are real, the body will sell for ~$3700 - they would sell it for $3999 - to steal the sales from the D3.

I for one do not care for more megapixel. Instead, I am actually very content with what is out on the market (Nikon's D3/700/300). Canon needs help and I'm sure their next FF model will suprise many.

I wouldn't put it past them. 50d has 1/250th flash sync, 1Ds3 has 1/250th sync, 5d has 1/200th sync (1/180th with pocketwizards). BTW: There's NO WAY the new 5d will be $1500.

@elader: And ESOFUN is Nufose backwards. Yes and elader is RED ALE backwards. Does drinking too much of that make you read backwards, or are you Arab anyway? I admit I am a kind of silly German and I have a universal mother in law, who is probably my biggest EOSFAN, since she likes the coolpix of our kids, who I also capture with my EOSes.

BTW dacia driver: there is something wrong with your noise reduction. Somehow the CAPS locks gets stuck all the time.

Back to the topic. So basically some of you expect more than a 1DsmkIII performance with all the latest tech and gimmicks like video added. Just a simpler AF. And you want it at 3000$. It that case it is inevitable the 1D series mkIII will have a shorter life time than previous generations. Oh man, there is nice stuff on the way but some of you are not gonna have EOSfun

"GEneral TSO"-if CANON will put the 3999$ price for 5DMK2-IT SHOULD be a damn good DSLR(equal with D3 on all aspects and with a little more advantage on IQ),BUT this will affect the 1DMK3 and 1DsMK3!!! TOUGH DECISION!!!!!

What, you think no one is listening to you? I wonder why? (thanks for the lack of CAPS in this one)

I don't think you need to tell us again; anyone who is in the least aware of what has happened with the MkIII series cameras in combination with the current market conditions could rightly assume that they won't last anywhere near a full 3 year cycle.

It would indeed be Canon's downfall if they did.

The other thing it needs to compete with the D700 is performance! The experience of many of our colleagues with the 1D III suggests that superior specs do not guarantee a superior product. As has been observed elsewhere, even if these specs are correct, it remains to be seen whether hands on review will reveal a camera that truly delivers.

Seems that Sony is announcing their 20+ MP Sony A900 FF camera on 10-Sep-2008. Rumors have it that Canon will be releasing their 5D upgrade a day before that. OF course, the accidental Popular Photo leak about the G10, SX IS etc. will now be made official.

Agree, I owe you an explanation why. Not all members here are always as friendly as most FM members. As a member with an opinion it could harm my business maybe even my private life if some mad guy wants to. Trust me I speak from experience. Let's have EOSfun without my pictures but including my comments

Well, eosfun, you said under THIS alias. Could well be you post your photos here under ANOTHER alias.

Wouldn't blame you if you did! Best wishes and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the new 5D gets released soon.

Actually "ESOFUN" is Nofuse backwards.

On the other hand, "EOSFUN" would be Nufsoe backwards...

But I think that both Nofose and Nofsoe would still like to have some EOSfun...

I don´t know the numbers. But I guess the xDs may be sold in the 10 thousends, while the xxDs are sold in the 100 Ths, the xxxDs in the Million(s).

And by far not all customers are unhappy with their xD1 MK IIIs. Nobody seems to be unhappy with the 1Ds MK III. Of course, there still is NO competitor.

I think Canon (their newest release 50D brought them leadership again in the Semipro segment, again with no competitor - the D300 is high end prosumer) is back. You are right with your expectation that 1D and maybe 1Ds MK IIIs will not have a 3year lifespan. Now there is Digic IV => what leeds to MK IV. But they are far away from "downfall".

Next step will be leadership again in their own created FF midklass. And of course they will have will have an follow up for 1D and 1Ds, too. I guess within the next half year.
But I am not really interessed in those, before they are not affordable for me.
I once payed € 2400 for my D60. And it was a great camera. two month later they offered 10D with digic I at half the price. I did NOT realize and was NOT angry. The camera did its job for 3 and a half years, before the shutter broke and I realized that the 350D costs € 200 more than the repair and it would give me 2MP more Digic II and a tremendous higher IQ. I switched to a 30D half a year later just before 40D came out.
In September I shot first time with a 5D. That was when I knew the next body would be FF with minimum 5Ds IQ. 1D did not offer that but a speed, what I do not need. Nikon does now and better in high ISO (what I need) but at a "feature price" of additional € 1000-2500. So what? I thought about the D700. But the presentation told me it makes more sense to wait. The presentator did not know the camera. And a Nikon customer who owned the D200, the D300 and ordered the D700 told me to wait and that he would have bought the 5D 3 years ago, if he would not have to buy new lenses, too.
He sayd: "Wait till Photokina. Canon will not let Nikon go. The 5D is what WE get now. The 5D follow up will be great again. The 5D still is!" Nice man. He trusted more in Canon then many Canoniers do.

So I've been reading this thread and the other rumor threads over the last couple of weeks (just preordered the 50D and waiting to order the 5DMKII or 3D or 7D, whichever one can give me higher, low noise ISO that can autofocus). I'm not sure why I'm reading these threads, I can't contribute, I don't know anyone on the inside, don't have a friend of a friend, or even a waiter that knows anything. So it must be the devil that's making me read these threads. Yes that it's it. The devil. He's whisperiing in my hear> Jimbobp = P Bob Mij, which is ancient Greek for "the devil is having EOS fun"........

So what is the topic? Can we actually discuss what the specs of the 5DmkII will be any longer? Why not just wait until the chinese 'leak' it on their website? Or is it London's turn now (like the olympics)?

OK... on topic for the man from Germany: If we do get a 5DII with digic 4 and enhanced high ISO, don't you think the 1DmkIII and 1DsMKIII deserve 'n' upgrades as quickly as possible?

I doubt the specs are accurate (in as far as they're educated guesses, with the variables being sensor resolution and display screen). I'm sure some of them will definantly hold right on, but some definantly not. Firstly, the 3.2" VGA screen seems unlikely. The gain over the 3" screen they have just started using is at the forfront, and a full image size increase of just 7% (less if you consider decimals).
The cost of implementing it now, when the design has likely been finalised anyway would be counter productive.

The only other point that can be disputed right now is the resolution... Though the specs would be akin to me saying "this car comes with wheels, a set of windows and headlights!"

HD movie mode... Could be anybodies guess at this stage.
