Takes a new format EG-S focus screen, which is a bit of a bummer for me, as I had a custom brightened EE-S screen which cost me $190US which I was hoping to use with it.
This camera may be boring insofar as it's much as expected (except with better weather sealing than expected, if I read it right), but it's going to be an exercise in conservative excellence in my opinion, and at the right price by the seems of things. Perfect camera for me, and I'm gladd I sold my 5d at not much less than you can get them new from HK a few weeks ago...

Its to ensure precious miliseconds are not lost when going to live view!

but the 5D Mark II autofocus system does include the lens micro-adjustment and light source detection functions we've seen on the company's other recent digital SLRs, so there are AF improvements even if the sensor itself hasn't been overhauled.

The Canon EOS-5D Mark II still features a compact body that forgoes much of the ruggedness of Canon's pro-level cameras to keep pricing down, although there has been some improvement to the environmental sealing - most notable around both the battery and CompactFlash card doors Canon tells us the 5D Mark II can function in light rain for "up to several minutes"

Question: by how much the price of the D700 will be affected?

Canon wants someone who expects real weather sealing to buy into the 1D series. Same with a 100% viewfinder and anything faster than 3.9FPS! Heck, the marketing people probably would not even allow them to state it as 4FPS.

The big upgrade is, of course, image quality surpassing the current 1Ds(stated by Canon in fact) and the silly Movie Mode.

It said something like improved sealing on the site but I don't understand what the problem is with not giving good weather sealing. It isn't that hard to do. I am glad they kept the print function. Yes, I actually use it in my field work as a visual anthropologist and I don't see that it hurts for those who don't use it. Maybe a custom function to change it if it would be a better function for something else if needed.

Is this confirmed? Where did you see the 5DII price?

Any word on availability date?

Very little! These cameras are competing for different customers. The D700 offers better AF, true weather sealing and faster FPS with Full Frame in a rugged pro body. The 5D offers superior image quality but none of the other features of the D700.

I have a feeling its just a 24-105 f/4L

For reference, here's my 24L mounted on my 5D. You can see the lens in the "moon shot" looks more like the 24-105 on the inside than the 24L

Question? Why all the worry about weather sealing? I get the whole dust issue, but what else?

My 5D has been drenched in water twice.. I'm talking like full buckets of it poured on! It's also been completely frozen. Read, solid block of ice where I had to pound it on a table to knock the ice off of it in chunks.

Both times the camera stopped working, but as soon as it dried out/thawed, it worked perfectly.

I'm not sure how much more abuse it should take.

When the water stuff happend, I could literally see water sloshing around in the eye piece!!!

You can get the D700 at 2729... so pricing doesn't matter too much. Specs are crap. I'd rather buy the A900 even to be honest.

Clearly you haven't seen the sample images at iso 800 from the Sony. Not good at all.

The JPEGs are awful... but the RAW samples are fine.

Is it me or every time Canon releases a camera these days you get the feeling you're being shorted.

It'll be great I'm sure, and we'll all be raving about the IQ soon enough.... but..... you know, there's never the idea that Canon are giving you the best they can deliver at a price point - just the least they can get away with giving you.

(where can I pre-order)

I'm guessing the 1Ds Mark III owners are going to be a little peeved? I'd like to hear them chime in with their thoughts.

When did the 1Ds Mark III get released?

They still only give you +/- 2 stops exposure compensation. That's crap. Nikon has offered more for a long time.

I have a 1ds3. I'll get a 5D2 for a backup and situations where I want the higher ISO but dont need to worry as much about the weather sealing, AF accuracy.

I'm not peeved at all, I knew a newer camera would come out after I bought mine, and I'll know that about the 5D when I get one.

These arent baseball cards you know... digital cameras only depreciate. Use when you have them, earn some money back, sell them when you must upgrade, at a loss and view the loss as a rental fee. Thats tech hardware. Not much more to it than that.

Well I can walk 15 minutes away and get the D700 for $2780 even at today's 104 crappy yen rate. Oh the days when it was 130 yen to the US$.

Yeah I will buy one but I know what you mean.

I have to admit that on the weather sealing, which I would like, as we know doesn't exist on the 5 but mine has been used in heavy rains in China and on the dusty plains in Tibet and came through fine. I would still like the weather seal though. I don't buy the pro cameras because for my work they are too big and heavy.

hahahhahahahahahah oh god. That's just hilarious.

question though: If you were given THAT AF layout, BUT it could focus on anything (even in absolute darkness) and it is at the same price point (i've heard of 1d3 and 1ds3 owners claiming they could AF at pitch darkness), would you still buy it?
