p.1 #1 · Anyone Tried Colormunki

Hey guys,
Calibration comes up all over the place over and over. I have previous used coloreyes and the standard puck that comes with that. About 300 bucks when I got it.

Colormunki (www.colormunki.com) is flashy and nice looking, and a single solution for printer and monitor and video projector, which I like, but I don't know if it is actually any good, so I wanted to know if anyone here has used it.

I considered it - sounds cool. then I found out that you *have* to be online when you install the software and you're only allowed to activate 3 copies. That just plain sucks. A Mac Pro and a Macbook pro both running dual boot with Vista = 4 copies. I had plans to calibrate my systems and also the projector for the photo club - but not with their draconian registration. Getting to where the manufacturers want to put you under their thumb every chance they get. I sent their sales an email explaining why I wasn't going to part with my money for it. I encourage other like-minded individuals to do the same.

I purchased it recently to replace the original Colorvision Spyder. I have done the monitor and several paper profiles with good results. Simple to use.

How did you get beyond the licensing BubbaJon was talking about. Was considering the ColorMunki, but the print server I use is off line. My projector at work need color help, so I am way beyond 3 computers. Is there 30 day installs you can do?

ColorMunki does not calibrate projectors, just LCD and laptop displays. It has received some bad press lately for software problems.

Jerry - Why do you say that the CM doesn't calibrate projectors? All of the product descriptions say it does and even one of the posters in your LL link says it does. It also does printers.

Jerry,
One of Colormunki's selling points was profiling monitors, printers, and digital projectors. Kind of an all purpose profiler.

Licensing for me was not an issue. I have one setup and it is always on-line, so I knew nothing about the issues described by bubbajon.

I cannot compare the monitor calibration to another system, since my old spyder will no longer work. All I can say is the the colors on my monitor match my prints.

My misconception, sorry about that.

I have not used the ColorMunki because of the limited software ability. It is targeted at the beginner/advanced amateur market.

I use the Spyder3 Studio which does an excellent job in both monitor calibration and printer profiling.

Actually Andrew Rodney placed Colormunki above Spyder 3 in capabilities when he first reviewed the system, he felt the abilities were close to Eye one profiling capabilities. Then supposedly X-Rite fired the software team in a cost cutting mode and it has been foundering ever since. Shame it hasn't been fully exploited, it was sounding great for a while but I wouldn't touch it until the software is more under control. Now the licensing seems to be a problem. Luckily I have been able to find good profiles for the papers I am using. I could use a calibrator upgrade (original spyder) but I wanted profiling too.

Andrew Rodney has never reviewed the Spyder3 Suite, so his opinion is as speculative as mine about the ColorMunki.

colormunki doesn't work with Spectraview II for NEC monitors, so it would be a while before i get it.
