Be sure to give Imaging Resource's 50D review a go as well. They compare it to the 40D and D90 and I believe their methodology is a little more sound:

IR used to make big prints and compare cameras that way, iirc. too bad that don't do that any more.

They still use (large) prints for their reviews...

Just a general comment from a long-time Canon shooter who recently upgraded to a 50D. There has been an inordinate amount of wailing and gnashing of teeth out on the boards when it comes to higher ISO noise values from the new 50D. If you look at IR's test results using their handy comparometer the 50D matches the D300, the 40D and Canon's XSi/450D to my eyes. All three of these cameras have lower pixel counts to boot. I shot my first college hockey game of the season this past weekend with the 50D and am very pleased with the ISO 1600 results. AF is pretty darn accurate too. Overall I'm happy with the choice to upgrade.

I started digital with the 10D. I kept the 10D and purchased the 30D. Was not happy at all with the 30D and was able to sell with a small loss and bought the 5D. It was a night and day move.

I am still happy with the 5D but needed a smaller sensor camera as a backup to the 5D. I decided to sell the 10D and have purchased the 50D. Overall, I am happy with the purchase but admit it is a different beast. It is different in that you cannot (or I could not) pick up the camera and shoot. I had to read the manual first because the menu system is completely different and requires a lot of thinking to make the right choices.

When I got the camera it had 1.01 firmware. I have upgraded to 1.03 but at all time I have not encountered any errors.

Dear all

Is there anyone having error 01 problem after the firmware update? The unit will hang after this error apear and only can re-use after removing the battery.

Regards,

Jeffery

Err 01 is most probably due to contact/s between lens and body and it happens generally due to 3rd party TC or extension tube. Dirty contact can be one of the culprit.

thanks for the info but when these error incur the camera attach with canon 18-200mm lens.

After the first incident these error didn't appear anymore and there are high possibility as what you mention, lens contact are not properly connected.

For good reason. I've been quite happy with a new 50D, but not at 3200+ ISO - mainly due to banding, which no amount of NR will kill.

<shrug> I'm willing to bet this could be fixed in firmware, at least at 3200 and maybe 6400 ISO. Canon was obviously in a hurry to release this body.

Curious, if NR software cannot fix banding...why would firmware? It is just software too...
Seems like I read somewhere there is an app that is used to correct banding...I have noticed the banding too at high ISOs..
All in all I am in the same boat as you. I like the camera, but not at 3200+

The 1D had a banding problem that was fixed with a firmware update but I don't know if it was caused by the same thing that causes it in the 50D. Besides the noise is bad enough to not use a file that has banding in it anyway.

Could the banding issue be caused by a memory card?

I have had no issues with banding at high iso.

I haven't either, at least not at ISO 3200. I was toying around last night with the 50D/Sigma 30 f1.4, taking shots of my iPhone sitting on my lighted MacBook keyboard with only candlelight and the led screen for illumination in an otherwise dark room. Sure there was some noise (though not that bad when printed), but no banding. I'll post a sample later when I return home.

I'd be really interested to see these samples if you do have time to post them. thanks!

Is this with NR set to standard?

Thanks

Shoot them RAW and convert without any NR. That is what I'd like to see.

My JPGs (which I don't shoot very often) are overly NR'd IMHO. I see the banding in RAW at 3200+.

If I get a chance, I'll post an example. I pretty much have deleted all of my 3200 ISO test shots...

Nope. Try copy & paste, or click here
However, the link is for 5D Mk2 and it's not related to some new lens.

Front [back] focusing refers to a malfunction (NOT user error) when the camera AND lens assembly focuses at a point in front [in the back] of the intended spot. In other words, if you focus on an object 10 feet away the image shows that the actual center of focus was placed 9 [11] feet away.

Micro auto focus is a setting on the camera to correct minor malfunctions of this kind.

Looking at some of the ducks/birds being posted with the 50D in the N&W forum....I don't think I am impressed with this camera just yet. I see grains,noise...at ISO1000 pics posted on page1. yikes...

At ISO 800 there is already quite some noise.
At ISO 3200 there is banding.

This is a very nice camera. It does have very good image quality, but you need good light. It reminds me of the 100-400mm. Both behave similarly.

I have been shooting my 7 month old baby inside my house and the 50d is definitely not a low light camera.
But on the rare occasions where I happened to shoot in direct sunlight, the results were very good.
Just like the 100-400.

However, I came from a 1DMIII, so take this with a grain of salt as I am kind of spoiled...
