The reason for my statement is purely based on the price point that Canon has introduced the 50D at. Over here in the UK it is £1200, when the 30D/40D came out they were both in the £750 bracket. I'm assuming this means that they will still continue to sell the 40D and not discontinue it like they did the 30D
I'll bet that the 40D will still be available for a month or so, until the 50D hits the streets for real. Kind of like when they released the 450D. At first the 400D was there too but surely disappeared from the shelves.
From the specs point of view, the 50D is likely to be a great one too.
We're all waiting to see what will happen on the full frame scene. The replacement of the 5D is overdue and rumors hint that it should come about for photokina in september... we'll just have to wait and see, won't we ;-)
Cheers,
Philippe

I'm sorry but the 50D really is a replacement for the 40D, no matter what Canon may tell you. Yes, it's more expensive, but so what? New tech usually is. I paid about $1500 for my 40D a year ago with the kit lens. It's since been sold, but you can look at the 50D as a direct replacement since it costs about the same on day 1 as the 40D did ($100 more). That said, since the manufacturing costs for the 40D have doubtless dropped, it makes sense for Canon to sell it alongside the new 50D at least until stocks are depleted, if not beyond that.

That's my whole point, they aren't the same price. At least in the UK, the 40D came in at around £750 whereas the 50D is £1200, a whopping £450 or $850 more
It seems to be launched at a strange price in the UK. I agree with Stevens points. I was just looking at warehouseexpress and with the kit lens it comes out at £1500 approx $2700.
The D700 is not much more at $2999 I presumed the D300 would be its main competitor.
"Canon has built upon the success of the popular EOS 40D model - which will remain in Canon's line - with the EOS 50D Digital SLR camera"
Canon usually says that with the consumer cameras. They usually continue the replaced camera for a short while after the release of its replacement, then it mysteriously disappears without a word.

dont take much froom that price as its the pre order price. the wrehouseexpress pree order for the 1000d was £499 body only but as soon as it shipped it was much less
