Live Mode now offers three ways to auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and new Face Detection Live AF, which optimizes focus based on faces detected in the frame – for fast, spontaneous portraiture. (dpreview)
WOW ... this is a big upgrade ... I just did a side-by-side of the Canon 50D versus 40D.
One thing I'm curious about I'm pretty certain that Canon uses a thumbnail for playback ... so when you zoom in 10X, it's very difficult to tell if you truly have dead-on focus ... hopefully this is corrected in the 50D since they (finally!) have the high-res display.

I thought I would be upgrading from my 40D to a 5DII, but the advent of 50D makes me wonder which upgrade to choose, assuming that 5DII gets introduced at Photokina. 50D has "consumer" features that 5DII probably won't have, and would let me keep my lens lineup intact, whereas with 5DII, I would have to give up my EF-S 10-22 and resiez my mix of L and non-L lenses.
Still, 50D is a successor to 40D, not a direct competitor to D300. With a recommended retail price of $1399, it is significantly cheaper than D300, and probably will do battle with the left-over D80, D200, forthcoming D90 if and when Nikon introduce it, Sony Alpha700, Pentax K20D. And, assuming that the IQ is as Canon says it is (and I have no worries, Canon has always delivered on the IQ), it seems to me that 50D looks good indeed.
Wow, an impressive upgrade that in many ways blurs the line between the pro-sumer and pro body line-ups, all at the (once upon a time) price of a 10D .
Yup, Canon finally started to think like Nikon does, the pro-sumer bodies are not that much different than the the pro bodies. I am convinced now that the 7D (to be announced at Photokina) will be competing directly with the 1Ds MkIII. Better sell the MkIII now before the announcement .
I'm guessing the 5D is going to be more of the same. If you're expecting a massive new feature set to compete with Nikon, prepare to be disappointed. They are upgrading things where it counts, final image quality. Big upgrades in megapixels, noise levels and capabilitys, and improved LCD. For me these are also the things I am looking for now. I don't want 50 new ways my camera can annoy me or break.
well was going to FF but now not so sure...50d looks great if its like 10-40d I am sure it will be a winner...
gotta love 15 mp
HD display
HDMI out more useful than the blue button
and its a CANON
Apart from the extra 5MP and Hi Res LCD, HDMI, UDMA, AF in Liveview, ...
what have the Romans ever done for us anyway.
Well it's a nice upgrade, but I can't see how people are saying it's a huge upgrade. Huge would have been a brand new AF system, wireless flash and real weather sealing on top of what was announced, which would have meant it matched the D300 for specs.
I'd say 60D will be the camera that gets Canon to D300, but by then D400 will probably raise the bar again.
Nice camera still and I've calculated compared to my 1D II and 5D it's like a 1.72x TC for birders. 15.1MP in a 1.62x crop means a lot of reach. A 500 f/4 + 1.4x TC and 50D would be enough for most situations. Even a crop to 50% pixels leaves almost the same as a 20D/30D would give uncropped.
