p.1 #1 · Lost PS data/presets...

I have no idea what happened, but a few days ago I opened up photoshop (7) and immediately I could see that the screen did not look as it usually does. There were windows open (channel mixer and one or two others) that I usually don't have open (and definitely did not leave open last time) and my actions are gone also (the ones I created, not the others).

My computer did not crash and was shut down the correct way. Any idea of what happened? Thanks.

It sounds like the PSPrefs file somehow got trashed. That's where all of your settings are stored. If the file is missing or corrupt, a new one will be created.

Looks like I'll have to start over in some aspects. How do you save your actions so they are kept in tact with the other actions (downloaded and saved in the PS actions file folder)?

It's good practice to have your actions, brushes, etc., outside of Photoshop. This way, if you need to trash the prefs, you won't lose everything. I keep mine in separate folders for actions, brushes, etc.

Then, when want to load an action or brush, just navigate to the folder of choice.

I've only recorded about 5 actions of my own, but I don't know how to save that action into a folder. How would I do that?

For the actions that I've downloaded in the past, I placed them in the PS actions folder, and they are still there, but for the ones that I created, they were never in the folder.
