Nikon D300 with 17-55/2.8
ISO 200
f/10
exposure compensation +1/3
i have sharpened it a little, put a high pass filter on it and an dulled the color a little with an adjustment layer to match other images in the collection (this is 1 in 3 of "memphis icons").
however there are some almost purple-y halos around the lights on the bridge. this is going to be a 16x20 canvas and don't want those to be so prominent.
anyone have any advice as to what i should do to rid/minimize them?
You could adjust he color balance by adding a little green. It is of course a trade-off. Lose the purple and make the sky and water more green. Masking could limit the area of green adjustment, but it would be a task.
Using Capture NX2, I bumped up the chroma in LCH and then using a color control point globally, adjusted color (deep blue) to try to restore to original (at least close but then my eye isn't the greatest either).
I think if you have the NEF you can probably come closer to removing the halos...

Another PS sequence to try: new adjustment layer>selective color>red>cyan + 80-90%
This kills a significant part of the purple cast without changing the color of the sky or water. It does lose a bit of red in the horizon.......but you could easily use the mask to prevent that happening.
Actually, I was agreeing with you Paul. I referred to my previous notion of masking to only change the areas with purple tint to limit the extent of the change. There are so many ways to do some things in PS, I always wonder how many better ways I'd have if I knew it better.
thank you guys so much! i really appreciate you all taking the time to try it out yourself and post your ideas.
in the original image, there were no halos. bright and colorful (very close to Bob's version).
they appeared after making the picture have a "grungier", muted look.
after a couple hours trying out tons of ways, i finally got them to tone down.
