p.1 #1 · Suggestion to maintain the standard of FM

First of all, this thread is not directed against any forum member or any particular thread here on FM, and my intention is not to offend anyone. I used to enjoy FM a lot as it used to have numerous threads from which I could learn a lot. However, over the past several months, I see that it is hard to find a thread that has some serious talk about photography (here I am mainly referring to the Canon forum). Therefore I propose the following:

- Allow the members to flag a thread, if they find it inappropriate for the FM standards. Do not display the flagging count to anyone. Or in other words, the flag count should be handled internally within the server.
- If the flag count reaches a certain large number (say 100), stop bumping the thread and let it sink down, eventually reaching archives. This way, people who want to contribute to the thread can do so until it hits archive.

I believe this will lessen the burden on the moderators by having the community to do the general monitoring. In addition, having a large flag count will prevent from a small group of people from trying to control threads in a biased manner. What do you people think?

It's not the threads, but the people. A community should self-regulate. And it does. Sorry, but I don't think such action is necessary.

Forums evolve over time. Trying to control that evolution is like trying to control the tide.

My only suggestion would be more use of stickies.... that way 5D replacement, Canon v Nikon at the Olympics, D3 v 1D3 etc., threads would all be confined to set threads and the board would not get cluttered up so much....

I would agree with this one. This would prevent smart asses like me bumping multiple rumor/repetitive threads by replying and cluttering the forums.

There was serious talk about photography on the Canon forum I'm not picking on Canon specifically here, but the gear forums are not know for their dissertations on photography; they are, after all, gear forums.

If there are members who are new to FM and doesn't know the standards of the forum, then I believe, other senior members (I am not a senior member, FYI) should guide / control them. I also believe that evolving in the wrong direction is something that should be checked.

I think, having a sticky for similar topics is a good idea, so that the forum wont be cluttered by repetitive threads.

When I originally created this thread, I was implying the countless rumor threads, canon / nikon bashing threads etc. running in the Canon forum where I like to spend most of the time being a Canon shooter myself.

I have seen other forums handle the many threads on a topic by having the moderators merge/append/join all of the later threads to the first one.
