I just wanna take this opportunity to go on record with my prediction for 50D Cat Detection and Dog Detection in additon to Face Detection. All three AF functions will only operate in One Shot. This I overheard while my knowitall source was "discussing" it with a lesser knowitall, the said gist being the additional burden on its single processor to crunch the Cat Detection impacts predictive AF enough to make AI Servo "perform less than advertised". So they disable detection in the Servo modes. That to me is a bit of a bummer, but hey, on the plus side I can be confident that my cat, dog, and smiling people shots will all be taken within an "acceptable" range of focus accuracy in static conditions. Of course none of this has any shred of credibility nor basis in reality, but hey, I had some fun typing it.

Got an interesting call from Hawaii today from a good friend at the Canon dealer meeting. Seems the 50D is going to come in a kit form with an 18-200 IS. We didn't discuss the camera much as he was mentioning several other new cameras (all P&S), but he did specifically mention his disappointment in the fact Canon is waiting until the show for the new 5D.

I just don't believe a 50D this fall! Too early. It's not due until Spring 2009!
Face detection. Yuck!
Yes there will be a 50D and it is going to have "Face Detection". You'll just have to select "Smiley Face" on the mode selector. It will be on the knob right next to "little running man".

As an admited gear Sl*t I am extremely excited that:... never mind...
Anyways. I never thought that that in my condition all of these 'informative' threads could be so cumbersome that I dread refreshing this particular FM forum. At least POTN has their own rumor forum... Scary.........
At least we now know that there are as many speculations as aardvarks... Or something like that.

OMG... I have been waiting for the 5D Mk II for SO long, and now a 50D, too. But I'd rather they use the new 12.2 MP sensor from the XSi and imporive it, ala XTi / 40D. 15MP on a APS-C sensor seems a bit much? Even F8 would see some lens defraction softning? I like the fact that F16 is usable on the 12.8 MP FF 5D sensor. Any thoughts? (hopfully just rumours)
funny how people are responding to face detection technology....reminds me of how many reacted to live view three years ago when olympus put it on the e330.
as for the 15 mp scenario on an aps-c sensor? it is plausable since the market seems to be moving in this direction: sony, pentax and samsung all have recent offerings with 14mp and there are already a few dslr's with face detection technology.

Just a note about the comparisons between rebel and X0D sensors of the same MP count - there is really _no_ significant IQ difference between these sensors (e.g. 20D v 350D; XTi v.40D; XSi v... uh... hmmm)
You would be utterly unable to see any difference in a print between a photograph made with the 40D sensor and the XTi sensor.

Ben, in a separate thread, you claimed that there would be some dealers' meeting going on right now. You also expected some sort of announcement to be made by the end of this week. That did not happen. Can you really blame folks for their mocking?
It's very hard to separate truth from rumors these days.
I am sure, deep inside, Canon users will like to see better products in the horizon. But they've been let down over and over again by Canon as well as the fake specs circulating on the web.
Honestly, I think requests such as a much improved AF sensor, better bracketing control (more shots and latitude), better metering control, in-camera AF compensation etc... are totally reasonable. Even if they cost more, I am sure people are willing to pay more for their 40D and 5D upgrades. Why Canon insists on handicapping their consumer products in order to protect their 1D cameras is totally beyond me. This is hurting them VERY much. Surely, they can see that? Just take a look at their recent market in Japan for the first half of 2008. Canon did OK... but FAR from what they could have done.
PS: If indeed it is true that Canon is announcing a 50D on Aug-26, then they better be sure it's a worthy upgrade 'cos Nikon plans to announce the D90 (from reliable sources such as jeff-c and Thom Hogan) on Aug-27, one day right after that. It almost seems that Nikon is playing exactly the same game they did with their D300 announcement which came very close on the heels of the 40D announcement. The D90 is going to be equipped with video recording capabilities... something that's been rumored to appear on the 5D upgrade.
I seriously doubt Canon is ever going to recover from their 2007-2008 fiasco. But I love their lenses so far... something still lacking in the Nikon camp.
It's not worth anything of course... until Nikon shows up with an 18 MP D400 APS-C camera. Then everyone here starts lamenting why Canon is lagging so far behind with a 10 MP APS-C upgrade.

There has been a lot of mocking going on in this thread. I find that to be very strange because there is some very legimate info here that you guys are making fun of. NDAs have been signed by the dealers, so they aren't suppose to talk about what has been revealed to the dealers. Sit back and watch for the announcement.
In fairness, if Canon told a group of retailers en masse what's coming, that shouldn't stop NDAs from being breached. Depends on the group size of course - dealers can hide in the numbers with relative obscurity.
I don't doubt that NDAs were signed, and I'm waiting for the first one to be breached
.... and I'm waiting for a weather-sealed 5D with super AF performance
