So, a "good" friend called you today from the Canon dealer meeting, and he felt more compelled to talk to you about future P&S cameras instead of new SLRs?
Hmmm...
In the real world things don't revolve around mid-level DSLRs, P&S sales make up far more of Canon's, and thus the dealers, sales.
As far as the people quoting specs here, don't confuse those with what I have posted. It is not going to be 15MP. Look at my history here and you'll see I have been around a long time and I don't randomly post what I "think" might be coming. I have no reason to doubt what a dealer tells me that I have known for many years. YMMV so if you think I am not a trustworthy source, no need to return to, or even read, this thread.
What you say seems to make some sense. Waiting until end of Sep 08 to announce the 5D replacement allows time to clear out inventory of existing stock. As Ben Horne stated in another thread, the 5D is no longer being delivered by Canon to dealers. In the meant time, Canon can announce a 40D replacement to keep the mid-level hobbyist excitement up and keep Canon users from jumping to Sony or Nikon.
There are many misconceptions about increased pixel count. More pixels does not mean worse performance: if you resize your 15 MP image at ISO 1600 to 10 MP (i.e. same print size as 40D), it may very well look better. On the other hand, you gain the flexibility of having larger prints at low ISO. In addition, diffraction is caused by reduced aperture size at the lens. More pixels only helps to show up the diffraction (when one pixel peeps at 100%) AFTER it's taken place. It does not make it any worse.
I believe Canon is pushing APS-C towards the lower-end masses. That may explain face detection etc. They are probably leveling the 50D at the Nikon D90 crowd. As for the rest of you in this forum, you are urged to upgrade to FF if you have not done so. BTW, Nikon is ready to push out their Nikon D90 any minute (Thom Hogan has already leaked the specs for it), and the delay in announcement is probably timed to coincide with the release of the 50D.

See post immediately above. I don't post rumors, but you are certainly entitled to your opinion.
Hammerli,
Please accept my apologies. Your original post was fine and I appreciate your sharing the information with us. My comment was directed to the other posters who added speculation to it (e.g. 15 MP, ISO 3200, face detection, HD lcd, 6.5 FPS, improve AF ...) and not to you who, thankfully, shared realistic information.
The big news is that along with "11x optical zoom" they're going to introduce "4x digital zoom". That's why the 15MP. That's why it needs a direct print button. Face detection will have custom functions for degrees of beauty.
And I mean no disrespect to the reasonable speculations, I just like to laugh once in a while.
I now is hard to belive but wait copule weeks and you will see that I'm correct.
I can't tell more because...
The 5D replacement (I don't now the name yet) will be anounce in September and will come out with even more MP (around 21).

So the new 5D is going to be a dumbed down 1DsIII?

Kinda doubt that Canon is willing to go that far.
Keep in mind that BOTH Sony and Nikon plan to release 20+ MP FF cameras. In particular, the Sony A900 is rumored to share the same body design as the A700. So, a 20 MP 5D upgrade is not a surprise to me. But time will tell...

Agreed, unless the 20+Mp version of the 5D is going to be upwards of $5000, or the 1DsIII is going to upgrade to 50+mp.
The one thing I have learned during my time on this forum is that photographers generally lack business acumen. Not saying that is necessarily the case here, but in general photographers nearly demand the functions of an $8000 camera with the price tag of a point and shoot, or will otherwise "jump ship" to the other brand, not realizing that the other brand is just as bad.

Considering the price difference between the D3 and D700, and their similarity in performance, I think it's not hard to see why the grass is greener on the other side.

Oh please tell us! Don't leave us hanging like that!
Well, let's see, I've been around here for going on four years now and one thing I know for a fact about all these people that get the inside scoop from a "friend that works for Canon" or the guy that works at their local camera shop or the kid that works the counter at BestBuys on the night shift is that they're invariably WRONG.
And this is one of the silliest speculation threads I've ever seen.

Got an interesting call from Hawaii today from a good friend at the Canon dealer meeting. Seems the 50D is going to come in a kit form with an 18-200 IS. We didn't discuss the camera much as he was mentioning several other new cameras (all P&S), but he did specifically mention his disappointment in the fact Canon is waiting until the show for the new 5D.
I find this to be a highly credible source, won't say why because my source frequents these forums and he wouldn't be happy with me if I elaborated.
I have to agree. Direct print, then face detection and ubber zoom with slow aperture. Sounds like a P&S to me.

Well, it'll of course only be available with LiveView enabled. We're making DSLRs into P&S, and I don't like the trend. Not because I don't think that there are some good features to be passed between them, but I fear that soon the low end DSLRs will no longer be SLRs, and will simply kill the mirror altogether and make LCD only EF mount cameras. Ugh.
