p.1 #1 · Ship date on the 430EX II?

Does anyone know when Canon will be shipping the 430EX II? I know it was initially announced as August but am wondering how accurate that is....

It's already in the stores and has been for some time. A friend of mine bought one at least a month ago.

Here is the listing at Vistek, for example:

A couple of dutch internet shops have the 430ex2 in stock for €219,- (€20 more than the 430ex) so they do exist :-)

It appears that although this flash has been on sale in Canada for some time, it hasn't yet been released in the US.

You can always order one from a Canadian store, if you need one right away.

It makes me sick when I see a Canadian price next to a US price when our dollars are very close.

Just be glad you don't have to pay UK prices.

I am not sure what you are referring to. The Canadian prices are generally lower than US ones, when one factors in shipping cost and taxes.

One of the examples could be EOS 5D:
(I am calculating a purchase from Ontario)

B&H $2400 --> C$2900
Broadway Camera (BC) final cost (buying from Ontario) C$2415

There are a very few items that B&H price would be lower

I do own both EX 430 and EX 430II flashlights, both serve me well when i want to travel light and/or using them on my G9 or EOS 450D.
I bought the EX430II mainly to use it as a second slave flashlight next to the EX430 i already owned.

Most striking is the lack of noise from the EX 430II, the EX 430 is quite noisy. The EX 430II recharges quicker indeed. Connecting the EX430II flashlight to the camera is more easy (and secure) using the new quick lock mechanism (and metal foot plate)
For the rest both flashlights are the same.

best regards,

Rob

No improvements, I believe the only difference is the locking shoe mount instead of the screw-type.

Not true. It has a silent recycle (like the 580EX II), 20% faster recycle, a metal foot (instead of plastic), quick release locking, manual flash in 1/3 stops, and flash controls can now be set directly through the camera (including custom functions).

That's quite a bit of new stuff. Worth the upgrade in my book.

Is the 430EX (II) noticably smaller / lighter than the 580EX (II)?
Was thinking of getting one as a backup and/or to use when I wanna travel a bit lighter.

Yes, it's quite a bit smaller. Here is a review comparing the original 430 to the original 580. The size difference is virtually identical with the MK II versions.

Hey, it looks like the 430EX II is now in stock at Adorama and B&H!

I am ready to get one, but it's still at $330... Anyone know any reputable place that sells cheaper straight up without rebates/etc.?

D'oh. I bought a 580EX II at B&H a few months back for $339 (via a coupon code then). So $330 seems high for the "cheaper" one?

Where would one go about finding coupon codes like that? I am eager to buy a flash...

Those are expired now and it also happened to include the Canon instant rebate at that time. So they basically stacked the discount. As far as coupon codes, you just gotta google search for them, they come up every so often. It's random. Tye "B&H coupons" or the like.
