Are you sure? A lot of academic software is priced very low and can not be used for an upgrade. I don't know about LR, but Aperture Academic clearly said on the box it would not work for upgrades. May want to check before you buy.

I guess I'll find out soon enough. I have the academic version of CS3/Lightroom and ordered the LR upgrade the other day. Once the disc gets here I'll see (hopefully) if the upgrade works.

Yes, but it's the same as upgrading from a standard version. You don't get the academic discount when upgrading.

My son is in Med School, and had LR 1.3 academic. He purchased the upgrade for $99 and it has worked well. No problem upgrading the academic version.

TO my knowledge Adobe doesn't have an Academic version but an academic discount.
My CS3 and LR1.4 were purchased at an university bookstore with an academic discount. The CS3 sold is actually CS3Extended. Both are full blown versions. That's all they sell.
