p.1 #1 · Canon Updates

We all know that the 5D will be replaced soon. We'll likely hear about it next week sometime when they have their big sales meeting. At this point in time, the 5D is no longer available from Canon. Whatever stores have right now is the last of the new 5D's out there. Also, an interesting twist. The G9 and the S5IS have been discontinued. Expect a G10 soon.

Canon has also officially dropped the price of the 40D, and the XSI should see a price drop as well.

Canon's sales meeting is Aug 7 through 14, so expect to hear official news then. It doesn't look like we will be waiting until the show.

I just spent 8k on a 1ds3, its only logical that a cheaper model with the majority of the res and feature would come out shortly there after .

New lenses, that's what I'm looking forward to.

It probably doesn't, just that dealers can no longer order them.

Well the original 5D was $1899 when they offered the rebates so $1999 would be nice but $2499 would be good too

Glad I didn't go blow all the money I was saving.

Not too many buyers for this price, I believe.

Thank you for the info, Ben.

I will be a very happy camper if the 5D II is competitive against the D700 i.e. have a similar IQ/feature/price relationship. That's not too much ask, is it?

Let's just hope the 5d2 will actually be available in a timely manner. That's another thing Nikon has over Canon. When a model comes out, it's actually available (at least the d700 is). Canon's history is to not be available to purchase on a wide scale for months after they're "for sale."

I read that statement and thought, "yeah, we've heard that one before". Then I saw who posted it. We'll see what's around the corner then.

Well, I just committed to a used 5D purchase on the Buy&Sell board,
but for the price I'm getting it at, I'm content with it. I wouldn't lose
too much if I needed to sell it after a new model is announced.

I hope they really have worked out all of the kinks before releasing
this one. The last thing we all need is another body release with
focus / image blurring issues.

Ben's news also partly explains why Amazon had the 5D at the great
price of $1800 during the rebate and was slow to raise the price after
the rebate ended: I suspect Amazon bought up a large pile of them as
a final purchase.

After all the waiting, I am not expecting the 5DII to have much better
image quality than the already excellent 5D. Here's hoping it is a great
replacement body, though.

Not true with the original 5D which was easy to purchase within a month of its announcement (I know because that's when I purchased mine from B&H and I wasn't on any waiting lists).

I'm waiting for them to announce the new 5DII so that I can then go buy a 1DsIII for $8,000 (or thereabouts). I've making myself wait it out so that way I'll feel like I explored my options, but I still expect that the 1DsIII will better suit my needs/desires and will be worth it, unless Canon comes out with a "mini 1Ds" with about 18 megapixels, or more, at a price of somewhere around $6,000 (or less) -- that would be my dream camera.

As far as price for mint, used 5D is concerned, this was a good deal:

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/662647/0?keyword=5d,70-200,f#5908925

I would not buy an used 5D for some of the prices asked on FM board.

I think you've got things turned around my friend. Nikon is famous for not having their gear available for weeks or months after they announce it, at least until this resent string of announcements, particularly with their glass. If Canon announces in Sept. during the show, it's available in October ala the 5D.

Am I the only one who is hoping for a 5DII not so I can buy one myself, but so I can buy a cheap 5D from an upgrader? The current 5D is already more camera than I need, if only I could afford one

You're right. I'm just remembering the 1 series fiasco where the new cameras weren't avail for a long time despite being officially on sale. Hopefully the 5d2 will have a fast turnaround as well.

I'm still relatively new to the Canon world (40D was first Canon camera back when it first came out), so, historically speaking, what has the release of a new model done to the used market prices?

I just bought a 5D kit (before the rebate ended), and I have no regrets there, but I bought it knowing that I would likely want to upgrade to the 5D II or whatever in 6-12 months depending on the price, feature-set, etc.

I'm mostly just curious what people (those of you that are realistic, not the ones who think they are getting a $500 5D in 3 months) are expecting. $1000 used? More? Less? In what timeframe?

I've tried to avoid most of the speculation threads and topics around the 5D II, and this sort of falls into that realm, but as I said, I am hoping to get some historical info and precedent from those of you that have been Canonites for longer than I.

As I posted above, there are already $1000 5D cameras being sold.
