p.1 #9 · How do you get your work published in various magazines? | |
I'm currently in that part of my carreer when I'm about to go freelance. I'm currently studying economics and have a part time job.
It all started back in 2006 when I started studying. At one of the introduction days the student's union had a few hours where they presented themselfves. And there the Student Unions magazine asked if there were anyone into photography among us. Naturally I said I was, and a month or so later I was shooting for the magazine. It wasn't anything fancy, it has a circulation of 2.4k but what makes it special is that all the readers are studying ecnomists so getting advertising is pretty easy (the paper actually earns a few thousand per year). The job didn't pay ANYTHING (everyone on it did it for the fun) but has given me alot of experience.
In 2007 I did my cumpulsary military service, and because of me shooting for that magazine (and for the scouts) I got to serve as a photographer for my military unit - AND got to shoot the Military World Championships in Naval Penthatlon. They rented some kick-ass kit for us (MKIIs, 300 2,8s, 400 2,8s). I got some real kick ass portfolio shots.
In the begining of 2008 I continued studying and shooting for the same magazine for free. When shooting an interview with the chief editor of a business magazine in Helsinki he asked if I was a freelancer. Noticing the chance, I naturally said yes. He asked for my contact details and about a week later asked me to do a mug shot. I did and this has now led me to where I am now. Making a budget and calculating if it's worth it for me to start a photo business or if I should just keep it as a hobby and work part time.
