p.1 #1 · 1DS Mark 1 to 5D

I own a 1DS Mark 1, 24/70, and 50 1.8 II lenses. Has anyone switched from a 1DS Mark I to a 5D and noticed a differences in RAW IQ at ISO 100, 200, 400? What are those differences? My understanding is that the 5D would have less noise above ISO 400 than my 1DS.

I was getting ready to purchase an 85 II L lens for my 1DS. (I am hooked on the 85 after looking at all the pictures taken with the 85 in various threads and also seeing how good the 50 1.8 II really is on my 1DS) But now I am thinking of purchasing a 5D instead of the 85 and using my 24/70 and 50 1.8 II on the 5D.

I am not a professional photographer. Just an amateur with about 6 months experience with digital SLR’s.

Thanks!!

I would say that if you have owned the 1Ds from new and it's still working well I would keep it.

If you particularly need high ISO's then yes the 5D is a good choice but at 400 or under I doubt you are going to see much difference. The 1Ds is still a very good camera.

Good though the 5D focusing system is (particularly in low light), 1-series standard it isn't.

I went the other way and have not noticed a difference in processed RAW photos. However, jpegs are not as good on the 1ds.

After owning a 5d for a year and the 1ds for a couple of months I would not go back to the 5d but I'm looking at picking up a 1dIII or 1dsII in the next month or two.

Thank you.

Good to know that the primary differences between the 1DS and 5D are found above ISO 400 and in JPEG's.

There are lots of differences, my point is that the 1Ds is still a pro-series camera and fab though the 5D is, a pro camera is not going to become bad overnight.

Weather sealng, the AF system, build quality etc all in favour of the 1Ds, size, high ISO, low-light-focusing, zoom LCD review, newness n favour of the 5D

David,

Thanks. Understood. I was thinking of IQ when I made my comment.

Well the 1Ds was the first full frame pro dslr and the 5D was the first prosumer ff dslr, so they have similarities in that way.

If someone offered me a new 5D against a used 1Ds I'd go 5D every time, but if as I said, you know the provenance of the 1Ds I'd stick with it.

These things DO go wrong, so warranty is important (to me)

5D does not even touch 1Ds image quality in terms of clarity and sharpness. 1Ds is slower, heavier, bigger and its high ISO is bad. But, the 1Ds low AA filter makes the big difference when you look at the image.

I have the 1Ds and did not get the 5D when it came out because of the image quality that the 1Ds produces. For low light I can use other cameras. I use the 1Ds with my primes from the 180L to 14L II and that includes the 85L II. A close friend owns the 5d and I just think there is something just a tad bit better about the 1Ds image quality. I love the flower macros and close ups a 1Ds can produce with the 180L.
All that being said, I do plan on getting the 5D II for FF low light and the newer technology. I will still keep and use my 1Ds for macros and those certain images where I think the 1dS would excel.

Have owned both and now use 1Ds2.
Unless you need the high ISO, the 1DS Mk1 delivers better RAW images - sharper (due to very weak AA filter) and a 'realism' or 'as remembered' quality to its images that just isn't there in the 5D. Better color as well.
That plus all the benefits of the 1 series - build, AF, etc - and ability to have a VF unencumbered by etched AF points, etc.

The trick, as you may already know, with > 400 ISO shots with the 1Ds is to be careful about exposing to the right - the camera, being an early generation DSLR, lacks the signal/noise ratio or more modern bodies.

If you REALLY want to see what your camera will due - slap a used Leica or Contax lens on it - brings out qualities of that sensor that EF glass just can't.

Thank you all very much. Your comments are what I wanted to hear. The 1DS is a great camera!! My plan is to keep it and enjoy it some more.

Conner999,

I was thinking of picking up a used Leica or Contax lens. Would you mind pointing me to an adapter for these lenses? I did a search on the net, and here on FM, but really did not know what I was looking for.

Thanks!!

The original 1Ds has probably the lousiest JPGs I have ever seen. It's meant to be shot raw, period.

If you manage to expose the images properly, the 1Ds will yield better images (and prints) than the 5D as long as you stay at or below 200, maybe 400. Above that, and the 1Ds literally falls apart. The other aspect is that you really, really have to nail the exposure: it's the least forgiving camera I've ever used.

On the other hand, the 1Ds was the most fantastic camera I ever used (for its time). The 1Ds2 was very nice as well, the 1Ds3 just a yawn above that. Again, speaking for its time. I'd say that I shot my best photos with the 1Ds, in part because I didn't travel nearly as much with the 1Ds2 and 1Ds3 (kids...), but there was some magic about that camera... would never pick a 5D over it, unless high ISO were important.

1Ds is my main digicam and call me a Luddite, but JPEG is all I shoot. Takes real PP to finalize color and contrast. I stay at 100 ASA.

keep 1Ds and vote for 85LII. This combo is a killer in IQ department weaker AA filter + sharpest lens in shallow dof + best MTF combo - now you do the math.

I love my 1Ds and just haven't been able to justify getting a new camera as the 1Ds takes such nice pictures and Sharp! But...I just acquired a 5D pretty much for free after selling the other equip that came with, and I must say I really like it very much... it's faster, lighter, higher ISO shooting, and fat viewfinder with zoom, ( I wear glasses and I can hardly see the VF on the 1ds) and the images are extremely nice. I just printed a 24x36 picture on my epson 7880, from my stepsons swim meet that is ridiculous nice. I didn't even have to do any major processing except resizing and a little curves out of habit. Very nice and clean files. No, I can't say I will sell my 1Ds anytime soon as it's an awesome tool, and the files are extremely nice also... Very film like. I am going landscape shooting in utah next week, so I will do a comparison... I will try and shoot the same pics with both cameras and let you know the out come. But the 5D is a nice camera, but feels like a toy compared to the 1D series bodies.

Keep the 1Ds, I got mine early in the DSLR game, and still love it! If you have extra cash I would shoot (pun intended) for GLASS..

I doubt I would buy a 5D with a 1Ds. 85 lens every time - if you had the cash lying around, you could always sell your 1Ds and go and buy a 1DsII.

Whoever has the original 1Ds, hang on to it - it will be camera of the century - so, it will be a collection item someday. Trust me on this one
