Very nice. Thanks for sharing. It's good to know that the aperture control lever can be easily removed from the -FA Limited lenses. Some of my older SMC Pentax lenses, like the 18/3.5, are not so easy to modify, as the aperture control lever is one continuous piece all the way from the lens mount to the diaphragm. So for the 18/3.5 and similar lenses, you have to cut off the end of the aperture control lever, and that may reduce its resale value (although that might not be the case).

Wow,
Hardly seems worth all the trouble to turn these magnificent lenses into MF models just so they can be used on a Canon body. Wouldn't it just be a whole lot easier to use them on a K20D? Granted the 5D is full frame; will the image quality be that much better than the 12Mp Pentax CMOS sensor?
I don't get it. Someone please enlighten me.

Thanks,
JayT

I guess it's hard to explain. For me, it goes like this. I shot Pentax film gear for a long time. I switched to Canon DSLRs in 2004. I now shoot a lot of alternative MF lenses on my Canon gear, including Pentax, Zeiss, Voigtlander and Mamiya 645. If I'm shooting in a situation where AF (or flash) is an advantage, I'll usually reach for an L-zoom or EF prime (some are L's, some not), 'cause that's my system. If I'm shooting something special, or reaching for a small and lightweight backup lens with excellent IQ, then chances are good that it's a Pentax.

the K20D is a lot noisier than the 5D or other FF sensor bodies. dynamic range is also measureably and noticeably less that its APS-C competition. you have to carefully manage your compositions and light conditions to not push past the K20D's limits. if i don't have the time to monitor the camera, need better noise, AF, or metering accuracy, i'll reach for my Nikon bodies. if i am willing to baby the camera and reshoot on demand, then i will take the K20D or K10D. Pentax bodies are just much more work to get the highest quality results than it takes for any of my Nikon bodies. i used to think that Pentax will someday make some bodies that are as good as their lenses. now i don't think it's going to happen.

well, as you say, some of them are magnificent lenses and Pentax doesn't make a 5D (yet)... since you can put the lenses back, it's not a big deal. They are apparently "limited" and may not be available forever, so if you buy them now you can use them on a 5D and put them back into full Pentax mode when you have the native body down the road...

Pentax has said that Limited means limited production ability. they are much harder to manufacture than Pentax's normal lenses and that accounts for a great deal of the price difference. materials and design cost of course are higher too, but there is a lot of hand assembly and testing of each lens. that unfortunately did not translate into completely trouble free lenses. my DA21 was one of the first production run ones and i am convinced that it is out of spec. it severely front focuses on both my K10D and K20D. none of my other Limiteds needed AF adjustment to focus properly.

Is there a focus confirmation adapter (Pentax/Canon EOS) available for these lenses? And, would the lens need any modification if only being mounted on a 40D?

A Pentax-K mount lens won't need any mods to mount on a 40D. A quick search of eBay for "pentax eos adapter" shows at least two diffierent suppliers of focus-confirmation Pentax-K to EOS adapters. All of my Keos adapters are only mechanical, but I've had fine results with focus-confiormation adapters from buybuyeasy, roxsen and happypagehk, for C/Y, OM, F and M42.

No, actually they cannot be used in Av mode with manual aperture, the Pentax DSLR's do not allow the aperture to bet set to anything other than A when mounting a A or later lens.

You would need to convert the lens back to use on a Pentax DSLR.

The lens would however be usable on most Pentax Film SLR's, at least wide-open, you would have metering errors at other apertures.

Because the the aperture control lever has be removed ...
The A-Lock button of the lenses does not have any function ;

So the lenses can be used on my Pentax K100D with AV mode!!

Unless you've removed it, it will continue to indicate to the body whether or not the A lock is engaged, and engaging the A lock is necessary to get full function from the lens on a Pentax DSLR. You may or may not get accurate Av mode metering with the K100D, but it would not be entirely reliable.

I've always loved the look of the pentax limiteds. Thanks for posting samples on a FF camera. It was really eye opening to finally see the lenses with their real FOV. The images have such a lovely Leica-esque quality to them.

I wonder if shaving the mirror was necessary for the 77/1.8 (probably for the 31) the reason I ask is I currently use the SMC P-A 50/1.2 and the shots from the 77 are just amazing! I prefer not to modify my 5D as it is still worth (slightly) more than a brand new Pentax lens

In that case I might sell my canon 85/1.8 and get the 77/1.8, I'm comfortable removing the aperture lever and am a huge fan of pentax glass. As long as I don't have to shave my mirror for this lens it'll be a welcome addition to the bag taking up way less room than the AF Canon.

I'm trying to shrink my kit to smaller lenses (MF doesn't phase me, in fact it's quite preferable) and I have the 50 covered, now I'm considering this lens and the 180/4 Voigtlander and maybe the Leica 100 macro. Then later the ZE21/2.8 Distagon. I just can't replace the 135/2L, there's nothing much smaller with the same IQ and speed... or is there?
