p.1 #1 · Japan Photography

Hello FM !

I've been a long time lurker here and only posted a few pictures, but it's time to show a little more

I'm a french photographer deeply interested in japan. I've been there several times and you can check pictures from the last four years on my website :
http://www.alaindavreux.com
As you can see I focus on 16:9 and 2.35 format because I just love them. I'm also adicted to details, but I mainly shoot people so I'm posting in this forum.

I just arrived in Kansai and will stay there a while, therefore I'm now opening my 2008 series I plan to reale updates often and hope you'll like them I'll be covering matsuri (festivals) as well as daily life.

Here is my first picture for 2008 :

A carrefuly prepared fish, following the Ikama imperial cooking school tradition, will be offered to the deity.
Kibune Misu Matsuri, 2008.

Comments and critics are welcome !

Cheers

Alain

Very nice series! Especially like #2 and #3. The format is great and so is the extra white space, really gives it a cinematic view as you probably intended.

I lived in Osaka and Nara for a while... love the shots you got... They made me a little homesick for Nihon. Ano sakana ga sugoi desu ne!

I prefer emotional and evocative images over straightforward documentation. It's the diference between news footage and the movies.

For me,this latest shot would benefit from cropping from the right to eliminate the guy in the blue t-shirt.

Keep posting,

Liam.

Really enjoyed the photography and the subject matter.

My personal taste - have you tried other matting colors? I think the white detracts a bit.

Are those pics taken at a formal gathering? Those would be kimono's. For casual garments that look like that are called yukata (more than likely at a matsuri). Tid bit for the people not familar with Japan's traditional wear.

Great photos!

all of these were exceptional, but the last sumo one won me over. looks like a magazine print. i love your stuff- very nice and since japan is a favorite for myself, i loved it even more.

im a little distracted by the big white border. you might want to experiment with that- i used to do everything in a white border as you did, but your shots are exceptional to stand on their own- maybe a smaller border would work. loved your stuff.

thanks again

to me sumo was quite a discovery, from 3 meters away it's much more impressive than I though on TV and it is really captivating ! If you can come to japan, try to secure some tickets and come early in the morning (less crowded)

here is a new one :
