Here's a 1Ds3 set at iso 3200 and pushed 2 stops, so an effective speed of 12800. It has had a slight dust and scratches applied in photoshop:

Although it's a bit streaky in the shadows, I like the way at the bottom of the guitar it still resolves the 3 black lines around the edge. I would love to see what it can do with good noise reduction software, but I'm too mean to buy any for the moment, as these results look highly printable to me. It's amazing how on screen noise disappears in prints, and the detail just comes through. I think 1ds3 detail is still fairly impressive at 12800. Maybe the D3 is just the prince of high iso, not the king. It would be fun to see a no punches pulled comparison.

Impressive. I also like the way it resolves the relatively low contrast features of the guitarist's hand, finger nails and the pick. It's interesting to see how the DOF varies by comparing the broken string with those still in use on the neck of the guitar.

Impressive image as well. The 1Ds Mark III would complement my 1D Mark III well, other than the fact that the three of us would have to live in the doghouse.

Isn't the 1Ds III so clean at high ISO due to the fact it can't focus and everything is smeared buttery smooth

When you say "pushed" to 12800, do you mean that in post processing, you moved the exposure 2 stops brighter?

I had always wondered what it did to "push" the exposure in post.

That's exactly what he means. We all used to "push" Tri-X two stops to ASA 1600 whenever we needed to.

Honestly, there is so much BS on gears forums, good grief...I wonder why I bother.

I do thank the OP for sharing REAL photos from a REAL camera they actually own and use, and from someone that actually knows something about photography...kinda refreshing. But then again, who can believe thier own eyes? I'd rather have someone tell me then actually see a photo.

Lookin' good. Your image doesn't really have any bad color noise, and it has great detail, so I honestly don't mind the luminance noise, especially at that ISO.

Most NR software would probably make the image lose some of that "crispy" sharp look to it, so I'd keep it the way it is. You have a winner.

Depends on what guitar he's playin' John :P Sometimes that's my C string, sometimes it's my Db string, ya never know...it's a pain in the arse having to have so many tunings to play current covers. Everything should be in Eb.

That link you provided is one of the most disturbing and effed up things I've read. Almost as bad as the "bug chasers".

it's funny you mention that. back in the day i did a high ISO comparison between camera X and camera Y, where both cameras have a different max sensor resolution. i ended up creating a matrix for comparison, where i upscaled camera X images OR downscaled camera Y images OR left both as-is. on that note, what do you think is a fair comparison between a super-mega-pixel camera like the 1ds3 and a camera like the d3 that has about half of the pixels?

btw. great pic and awesome camera! way to put it to good use- to use it for what it was made for.
