Could'nt get a worse senario than that!:

Thanks for posting this, Alf. It is just like the bokeh that you hate so much from the Rokkor.

Do you see now that the Rokkor doesn't have "bad" bokeh, per se, but that people have simply chosen to post some shots where the Rokkor gets funky (like the shot above)? I rest my case.

Since you brought it up, regardless of how this thread started, it has turned out to be an extremely reach and rare resource on lenses that is very very hard to find useful reviews of, let alone image samples. And image samples that demostrate their most delicate quality for that matter. I could never imagine buying an alt lens in the future without checking this thread first, and personally I'm very glad to see both good and bad bokeh samples in it (if there is such a thing), so I know what to expect.

And a big thanks to Jonas for starting it and taking the time to make an index too

Cheers,
Spyro

Hi Alf,

I can't see how you can say that this shot doesn't have distracting OOF highlights. To me the OOF highlights totally dominate this shot. Some may like this look others may not, but the shot literally has hundreds of OOF highlights. Some may find it acceptable, others may find it unacceptable, but that to me seems like a pretty subjective judgment.

Best wishes,

Steve

But that is'nt an example of distracting OOF highlights, thats an example of worse case senario bokeh, with no real, distinct OOF highlights at all.
If you want to see what I mean by distracting OOF highlights just look at these Rokkor shots, posted in this thread earlier:

Sure you spend time cloning them out with PS but if you used a lens that does'nt suffer from this problem like my Canon FL55mm f1.2, then you would'nt have to bother.

And don't hesitate to ask or comment,

Jonas, I did'nt see the Canon FL 55mm f1.2 on your list...See page 9 for samples.

Do you have any examples with distinct OOF highlight shot with the FL?

To me the shape and the smoothness of the OOF highlights in my photo and leons photo are similar to the ones in your rose photo with the difference that edges in the FL bokeh are harder. I can´t see why you are so eager to trashtalk the rokkor and why you rank the FL so much higher. I really don't. If you post a really challenging background that the FL handles great you might be able to convince me. In the meantime I won´t rank either lens a lot higher than the other when it comes to handling high contrast bright oof areas.

OK, looks like I'm going to have to be the one to buy an FL 55/1.2, convert it, and do a direct comparison with the Rokkor, just to end this extremely annoying conversation.

I know as hell I won't "spend time cloning them out with PS" because what looks annoying and unacceptable to professional standards in your opinion is virtue of one hell of a fast normal lens for me. Oh and the Rokkor is more special than you think it is, shoot it at f2 or f2.8 and "annoying" becomes extremely smooth, while f4 gives you peak sharpness in the center, and f8 gives you best combination of sharpness and contrast across the frame.

If I had thought like you, Alf, I would have chosen another lens to shoot with, not "spend time cloning them out" like you suggest.

I'm surprised at how many people dislike this background effect, I would have thought more photographers would have enjoy it. Oh well, guess it's not for everyone. I for one, enjoy it. I think it gives the images an interesting look.

Spyro;
thank you for commenting in such a nice and well behaved way...
The thread was started with tounge in cheek as there is a problem for us all to admire the same blur at the same time. Which is good, or my wife and I would never have met.

Alf Beharie;
The index is updated every now and then, the last time was at page 8 and then it said
"Index updated". I was caught relaxed with my guard down when your bokeh duel started.
The index is now updated.

Daniel;
I like them. But I am afraid I like them based on some sort of technical admiration as they show us that so sometimes sought for circular shaped background, or tilted ones. A T&S I understand. The circular sort of background I'm not sure about.

@ All:
Is there any point in taking the hassle and make the index alphabetical? I'm not sure it is needed, but if the thread grows a better sorted index would be good.

kindest,

...and a flower for all of you:

heh, we should start an online gallery, where you can search for lenses (or browse by lens make, aperture, or focal length) to see their effects, along with information about what aperture was used, what camera, and approximate focusing distance Could be a fun community project to contribute pictures and info to such a gallery! Any gallery software allow users to upload their own photos and enter in the necessary info, so that one person doesn't have to do it?
