p.1 #1 · Backlit Ceremony

Anyone has experience in shooting a backlit ceremony? i.e. just all large windows behind and on the left side of the bride/groom in a hotel function room, and the ceiling is only about 9 feet so bounce flash will not be easy.

The ceremony will take place in a sunny afternoon, well, according to weather forecast

I have 2 580EX and a 5D. What can I do to get some well lit pictures and what settings to use?

Thanks!

technocraft:

did you just expose for the window and bounce your speedlite @ FEC of +1? Hmm, is that a composite?!

Martin.

Yeah, that's about it I guess. The ceiling there was around 8-9' (which I don't consider too high to bounce).

Mostly, I chose to take advantage of the backlight, as I am wont to do:

And it was only close to the window that I could do that - otherwise, without banging a lot more flash at them, they look this:

Thanks for the samples...they look good

Did you use flash in the last shot? I couldn't see a hot spot on the ceiling.

If they allow you to use flash during the ceremony, expose for the background and fill in with flash for your subject.

Cockeuck - Ed Pingol had a good post a few months back that touched the subject:

Shoot up (low angle) or down (high angle), which cuts out flare-y windows, crop tight for the same reason, or use off camera/on camera flashes direct so you have enough flash power against the bright window exposure, avoiding flash back reflections (hide them in subjects' bodies), or get maga-power flashes to bounce off the ceiling so you have a chance of balancing against the bright window exposure, or composite a few in Photoshop, or go with the flare (probably not all that popular with clients), or shoot from the other side of them (from the window back toward the center of the room), or shoot silhouettes, or re-create later where you control the lighting, or any or all combinations of the above.
