Ok, call me silly, but when I'm getting ready to edit lots of images or making the album I need to listen to some music to get me in the "mood" (don't know what else to call it). In this case, I always like to listen to this &feature=related" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">beat (especially the electric violin part!). This song gets me so energized, time flies! So any one else do this?

I get some soda, prop my feet onto the table and listen to either something really mellow to make me feel sentimental for their wedding or some kind of screamo to get me excited. The keyboard will sit on my lap rather than on the table, the screen will be beside my feet and the mouse will be distanced at the perfect reach for me. Ill also try to talk to someone on some instant messanger to keep me occupied.

I have to be in my "zone" I have a corner where I always sit, I turn off all the light, put on my special noise canceling HUGE headphones, blast on my rock music and work away.

I get in position . Mug of great coffee, Put itunes on in the background and run the Ricky Gervais pod cast back to back makes time go fast listening to silly british banter. Love Karl Pilkington.

I used to smoke cigarettes (I know, horrible but I quit cold turkey on January 22nd!!), grab a soda, and launch itunes. Now, it's just soda and itunes.

I set a timer so that I'm not sitting on my butt for hours lost in time. I get up every 45 minutes and spend the next 15 doing other things. That way I come back to the computer refreshed and reenergized. I find it helps to do the work in smaller chunks, it feels like I'm accomplishing more.

This has been my crux lately. I get so distracted when working on albums! Music helps me, but my instant messenger is the devil, maybe I should just unplug my LAN.

I like this idea. I've thought of taking a break every hour, but I never do it. I'm going to give your method a try this week.

I used to listen to music ALL the time while editing. I am a huge fan of the high of music. I've recently learned that to do something REALLY well, I need to be completely present - mentally, while doing it. Not only does time seem to go by faster because I'm completely mentally immersed in the task, but my edits look better, too. Through this practice creativity comes into play lots more often than before. It's exciting to see what my mind can come up with - without trying - it just happens. Before, it was just dronning through a repetitive task with the aim only on getting it done asap. I play the music while resizing & uploading to 'celebrate' my completion. Must sound weird, huh!

I've been editing a lot lately, and so as not to completely alienate my family, I have my laptop setup in the living room and can edit while we watch TV, make dinner or whatever. I usually work in batches of 50-100, so I break while jpgs are cooking or uploading.
Otherwise, it's in my office, feet on desk with some music. Usually some chill from somafm, or something off my harddrive.

i'm with you when i was in my high-stress, crisis-driven career i attended a work-life balance conference at duke university. the best tip i took away was to create 1-hour long play lists in different genre on my i-tunes. sit down to work, choose the appropriate playlist for the moment, start it up, and at that hour mark take a 15 minute walk.
keeps me sane, keeps the migraines away, and keeps my behind from falling asleep
pandora makes me happy - but i completely lose track of time.
