Last night i purchased the 24-70 from best buy and got an unbelievable deal. They were willing to lower the price to the rock bottom cost because all of the 24-70 L glass is being sent back to canon on 8/31 and a new lens will be released on 12/31. This is all info from a best buy associate who pulled it up on their computer system(i watched him do it). I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this new version of this lens. Best Buy was willing to let it go for 850.

Canon, or anyone else for that matter, doesn't call back lenses simply because they're being updated. What are they gonna do, throw them out ? I think the guy was BSing you. I wouldn't believe anything some kid at Bestbuys told me. Of all the people who might have that kind of inside info from Canon, why would it be that guy ? Canon release new lenses all the time, they don't get rid of the older versions before they do it.

Still, $850 for a 24-70 2.8 is a great deal. Unless if it was a demo. I didn't even know best buy sold the 24-70.

Why would they be willing to sell the lens for such a low price when their normal price is 1349?

They only sell the lens in certain stores. You can buy it online but all their camera gear is outrageously priced.

The lens is available in certain stores. The store at Sydney Marcus in Buckhead in Atlanta GA carries the 24-70 f2.8, 17-40 f4, 70-200 f2.8 IS, and 5D

Glad you got a great deal on the lens, but the rest of the story is pure BS. When has Canon ever done such a thing, and why would they? Geez, consider the source of your information.

I'll bet the store was just trying to get rid of the stuff. I'll believe a new 24-70 when I see one. The new 24-70 pipe dream is about as bad & likely as a new 100-400 or 5D...ok the 5D probably WILL get replaced EVENTUALLY.

Perhaps Worst Buy has stopped or soon will stop selling the lens, but Canon often does not discontinue products until are stocks are depleted. I would be surprised if BB can send them back to Canon, but they may have some special contract.

I recently spoke to my local canon dealer an he heard that canon was going to start releasing a new line of "digital" lenses for the new line-up of canon bodies. Apparently the older lenses carry a outdated analogue signal of and "digital will be the future. I'm not sure I understand all of it but it sounded legit.

The 24-70/2.8 is a late 2002 lens, already designed for digital sensors such as the original 1Ds of that era. Of course an improved lens could be developed, but the 24-70/2.8 is not as old as many popular L zoom lenses in the Canon lineup such as the 70-200/2.8 IS and non-IS, 100-400, etc.

Canon market share will plummet if future EOS digital bodies require new lenses.

Regardless, 850$ for a 24-70L, I'll take 10 at that price.
