p.1 #2 · Revised Alaksa Trip in 5 days! 05/2 - 05/31 | |
Hi Ashish,
Wow, again I complement you on your trip planning skills! I assume you are using The Milepost to get all of that detail? I’ll try to provide as much requested info as I can:
Campground request (neat, not crowded, safe, dont mind $$)
- Valdez campground RV
- Home campground RV
If you don’t have the Milepost, try to pick one up before you go. I looked at my 2007 copy and it lists all of the RV parks in Valdez and Homer. We’re not RV’ers, so I’ve never really looked for RV campgrounds or know their quality, but there are definitely a lot listed in the MP.
about the Alaska sea life center, the website says few things like octopus experience and other things, are they worth it, or the $20.00 admission is good enough?
Hard to say if it’s “Worth it”. As I mentioned before, we got in for free on “residents” day and I definitely enjoyed it, but I doubt I would pay to see it again. That being said, if you have kids they will definitely have fun! The “octopus experience” is just a small tank with an octopus in it that you stick your hand into. They also have others for starfish, anemones, etc. and lots of exhibits with fish, seals, birds, and a really HUGE Sea Lion! They are also supposed to have Otters, but I didn’t see them when I was there. Maybe I sound jaded or I was expecting more, I don’t know. But others I have talked to say this one is better than similar Sea Life Centers in places such as San Diego, Atlanta, etc.
Request advice on Anchorage on 05/31 for the time we have (we need to have lunch as well).
From your itinerary, it sounds like you have to drop off the RV at 11 am? Is it possible you could talk them into letting you have it for a few extra hours? If not, maybe get a shuttle from them to the airport and rent a minivan for a few hours? (I assume you will have lots of luggage with you). You could even check all of your bags while you’re there renting the car, getting that out of the way early. (BTW, what airline are you coming up on? Alaska Airlines just changed their checked bag policy to only on free bag – just like United. Lucky for you it doesn’t take effect until July 1)
Here’s a site that gives good street direction up to Glen Alps:
http://www.romancingalaska.com/southcentral/SC_glen_alps.htm
If you are coming directly from the RV place you take the New Seward Hwy south to O’Malley. From the airport you take Minnesota St South (then turns into O’Malley).
Since you’re headed up to Flattop, there is a burger joint (Wee-B’s) also on O’Malley just one block west on the other side of the New Seward Hwy. Also, there is an IHOP next to the Lowe’s (just another block further east at the comer on the other side of Old Seward Hwy) and a really good Thai place across from the Lowe’s (in the shopping center next to the Car Wash way back behind Wee-B’s).
Again, for dinner in Anchorage after you come back down the hill I would recommend Simon and Seaforts downtown on L Street. (907) 274-3502 Make reservations early (like today!) and ask for a table with a view.
Hope I’m not boring you with all of my suggestions, but you sound like someone (like me) who appreciates all of the information and detail you can get! Hopefully you will have some clear weather for photography. As I am writing this, today is one of those absolutely crystal clear days that remind us all why we live up here. But we’ve also been having rain, so come prepared for any kind of weather, including hot weather up in Fairbanks. Also, the trees are just now starting to turn green, so Spring should be in full swing by the time you get up here.
Enjoy your trip, I can definitely tell you are excited that the big day is approaching! We expect a full trip report upon your return!
Regards
