I bought the D300 with 17-55/2.8 for family P&S duty. With grip, the heft and build quality is quite comparable to my Canon 1Ds. The rendition of skin tone is uncanny, and the 3D tracking AF is quite beyond any current Canon model. Thumbs up!

Please don't! While some may be offended (I don't think Andre was) I enjoy the comparisons. I'm tied to Nikon because of simple economics - it is cheaper to buy gear for what I already have than an entire new system. But I wouldn't feel bad adding a nice Canon piece to my kit if it served my purposes.

Besides, it is good to be able to help others make objective decisions (I just recently helped my brother come to the conclusion that he should buy a Canon 40D over a Nikon system because it serves him best) without coming off as a fan-boy. Not that I really care what someone else thinks in that regards, but if you are objective people listen better, in my opinion.

Still, keep up the discussions and comparisons - it helps many more than it upsets. It also gives some of us an insight into what Canon is doing, since we might not have their gear in our bags.

Well a lot of people are selling the D300 to make a profit. A few weeks ago with the right coupon combination you could have gotten a brand new one for about $1300.

Where could you get a D300 for $1,300? It sounds like the offers you see from bait-and-switch online camera stores.

$1300 seems a little low but I vaguely recall a D300 + 18-200 VR combo for around $2100 + change. Flip the 18-200mm for about $600 and you had a D300 for about $1500, close to $300 cheaper than buying body alone if one was willing to do the work.

Dell coupons! There were lots of 20% off coupons around plus a 10% stacker off Ebay. After taxes and shipping it comes to about $1300. Even without the 20% coupons, it's not hard to find 10% coupons and 10% stackers

Did someone mention DELL!!!! Don't do it!!!!!! Dell used to be fine, about 10 years ago, but what I have seen people get from them in recent years is terrible. The best way to go is build your own or find someone who can.

Well people.....I still like my D2X it took me a long time to save up for it and I cannot afford to keep buying the latest and greatest everytime it comes along like some people seem to do and what happens when Nikon bring out their next big hitter? it will be ooh ahhs and wet pants all round and the D3 will be old hat so to speak.....it wont happen over night but it will happen. That does not mean I would not have a D3 because I would just can't afford one and I will never sell my D2X.

I have worked personally and professionally with Dell computers for a lot of years. They are still extremely decent machines for an unbeatable price, and some of their lines (the Precision line in particular) are actually very excellent computers.

They are hit-or-miss with non-computer goods. Once an item goes out of stock, you'd better not need it for a while because there's no telling when it'll come back in. Still, their coupon madness and recurring sales will often result in unheard-of prices on some items. I ended up with a Harmony 880 a few years ago, a $200+ remote control, for $20 after rebate. Taken advantage of many other deals over the years as well.

Dell tends to get a bad rap partly due to the sheer volume of machines they sell. They are not on the same level with, say, Lenovo or Sony when it comes to build quality of their computers, but I've seen far more Gateway and HP machines die, percentage-wise, than Dell boxes.

I love my D3, and have had it firmly in my head that I need to come up with another $5K so I can have one for a backup, too. But I guess I should be getting my hands on a D300 for a test run, huh? Could save me some $$!

For an "unbeatable price". Pardon me, but that is a line of BULL. I recently built a computer for $1500 that Dell priced out at $2600. In fact I have built several computers lately, a couple to DEL specs and I beat their price by HUNDREDS of $$$ each time.

Also, the shear amount of software crap they put on their machines boggs them down and makes them unstable. The most stable and reliable PC is one with a clean OS install. I've spent far too much time as of late fixing DELL machines ... typically requiering a wipe of the HD and a reinstall of the OS.

I have no experience with their non-computer goods, but as long as it is not built by Dell or has a Dell name on it, I would consider it for the right price.

Their business line has virtually no pre-installed software, certainly no more than any other business computers, and usually less. Their consumer line seems about par for the course as well, actually, though there are usually a few useless utilities on it, and I typically recommend buying from small business partly for that reason. HP, Gateway, Compaq, Sony... all very guilty of loading up consumer machines with junk.

There are exceptions to the pricing, especially on the high end, but quite frankly, there is NO WAY that most computers can be built, with an OS license and a monitor, for the mid-to-low range of the Dell systems. At the highest end, when you've paid for all of the upgrades, the price jumps - but again, compare apples to apples here, which is prebuilt systems. I've yet to see ANY high-end prebuilt system that compares in price to a user built system.

At the mid to low end, though, the prices are ridiculous. The last system I purchased was a Core2Duo, 3gb of RAM, Vista Business, and a 20" S-IPS digital flat panel and it came out at $600 with free shipping. A S-IPS flat panel and Vista Business alone will run you $600, or more.

Anyhow, this is all off topic and I'd be quite willing to argue all day about this, since I've bought, serviced and supported a couple thousand Dell machines in the last 7-8 years, but it sounds like we both have our minds made up . Dell isn't stellar, no doubt about it - but they're a lot better than the most vocal detractors would have you believe.

Dell computers have there uses - by comparing a Dell machine specced up to the level of the Mac Pro I bought, I was able to justify the cost of the Macintosh to myself (if I'd compared the cost to something I could have built myself, I might never have justified the purchase) as they say... ignorance is bliss!

All you people buying D300s are fools!

Pony up for a real camera! Buy Canon! Go 1Ds MkIII or go home!

Maybe their buisness line is better though our company builds our own since it costs less to do so. At the the consumer level, it's a no-brainer ... DON'T USE DELL or ANY of the other compnaies (HP, Gateway, etc etc) as you can build one for yourself that beats their price ... NEWEGG is you friend!

The cost is trivial compared to the emotional pain suffered at the hands of professional photographers laughing at your black lenses
