Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting the Tamron AF 19-35MM F/3.5-4.5 for wide angle shots for my D40. I'm new to photography and was just wondering, will it autofocus with the D40? I wouldn't mind manual focusing as I do it all the time with the kit lens

I was looking for a wide angle lens.
Then the 12-24 Tokina is what you want. The 19-35 is full frame and equals about 28-50 on the D40. Or try the Sigma 10-20MM lens.
if you want to go wider than the standard kit lens (18-55), you have to go for a Nikkor 12-24 (very expensive, costing more than twice the price of the camera) or the Sigma 10-20, an excellent wide zoom with HSM (built in motor), allowing to focus on the D40.
But anyway, there are no cheap solutions, that's one of the serious limitations of the D40/D60/D40x bodies.
In fact I have the same problem. I would like to go wider than the kit lens (18-55) but I cannot pay 1000 dollars or so. I bought the ("cheap") D40 for a reason ! So I could go for the sigma 10-20. But maybe also for other lenses that do NOT autofocus. Some do say on forums that they do not use autofocus anyway on these wide lenses. So what is the problem ? I must admit what i say is pure theory. I do not have any experience with these lenses. So maybe this is stupid. But if it would be possible it would open possibilities, for example to by a relatively cheap Tokina 12-24 lens on ebay, for ex. What do you think ? By the way, I do use the AF 50mm 1.8 with MANUAL focus on my D40 and make nice pictures with it.
