Well, for the first time I made it out for an early morning shoot. My chronic debilitating headaches makes morning a slow time for me so this is a rare thing. My friend was returning to Sweden & had a very early flight so since I was 2/3 of the drive there I took the time to go all the way there. I was actually there at 8:30am - - - Amazing for me. I want to say it here & now... My only beef with Bolsa Chica is the fact that we're always above the birds. But I met some of the people working there & they explained why the wall is the way it is & it makes sense...
The best part of the day was meeting a fellow FM poster Peter aka PSquared63 - - that was so much fun.
Equipment used D300 with Sigmonster 300-800mm f/5.6. Full Wimberley. I shoot at ISO 400 for shutter speeds to get high enough for my liking.... I shoot in A mode (Aperture) at an f/8 & do E.V. comps as needed.

Lil, Fred Astaire? Too funny but yes they do remind of him. That grebe is a new one for me. Very nice series, love those stilts.

Thanks Tim,
think about it - - "Daddy Longlegs", long legs, sleek, top hat & tails.
Grebe is a new one for me as well. Glad you like the stilts.

Excellent Lil, just excellent!
My choices are 6, 7, 8 and 9... and I do see Fred there tipping his hat in that signature step he used to do. Good fun.
I like the copyright, except I'd pull it down into the corner a little more IMO

Thank you Terry,
glad you see what I mean about Fred Astaire....
OK, I will try & since I'm only on trial here I have to decide if I want to pay for a copyright program or not. I can write my name in through CS3, but it's not the same. I have it written in through my camera digitally, but that's no real protection....

Lil, I do mine through CS3 and can move it anywhere in the image, at any size I wish... If you want, you can even save it as a sizeable custom shape and just drop it in at will.
If you want to save some money... think new lens... 105 VR .... I'll put together the 'how-to' and either post it here or send it to you...

Sounds great Terry,
please do....
Yes, I do want that 105mm VR & I know someone who might want my Lester A Dine Kiron........

Great set of captures, Lil! Very interesting explanations!

Hi Claude,
thanks for taking a look. Glad you like & - - - I come from a highly communicative family. We talk a lot. Might be not just my family or heritage, cause a few of my friends from back home have visited over the last few years & we chat chat chat all the time for hours while they're here......
I like giving a story with my posts. Gives people a little bit of a background to what I'm presenting. Makes it more personal.....
Thanks for taking a look

Excellent set Lil. Some the stilt shots are super.

Thank you Harsha,
you are very kind. I felt originally the only good thing about the day was meeting Steve. Now I see it wasn't an all that bad day.
Lovely stilts Lil but my fav. is the Grebe! that is a relly neat looking bird! crazy eyes!! the "aperture" in the middle looks like a lens closed down to about f11
About the copyright...I think it will look better/less distracting if the letters were somehow more transparent since they're on the image itself rather than the canvas but that's just my opinion
Hi Lil, I enjoyed viewing these. A few weeks ago I took a business related trip to Phoenix and, while there, visited the Gilbert Water Ranch and Riparian. My stilts and Egrets suffer a little from short focal length syndrome! That Sigmonster of yours really did the trick for you.
I read your comments in another post (zoom vs prime for birding) about not always being able to zoom with your feet. Water fowl are such a great example of that, as you can get right up to the water's edge but (usually) can't get in any closer.
I was limited to a 300 2.8 with 1.4x TC combo (so 420mm focal lenght, max) and could have really used a Sigmonster.
BTW, the Grebe is really cool looking. I have not ever seen one of those in person. Nice series, Lil!

Hi Nelle,
hows the house deal going? Moving in yet Glad you like the stilts. Grebe is neat isn't it. I'll PM you the location of more of him & his wife for you to look at if you'd like. Yes, he sure does have an amazing "aperture" maybe even a f/32
I'll see what I can do about transparent copyright. I think I'd like that better as well actually...
Thanks Nello

Sigmonster may well be a huge monster, but it does come in handy. But there are times a smaller lens is more beneficial. I have a Nikkor 300mm f/4 - - perfect for fast & easy. The f/2.8 is immediately larger & is better with a monopod immediately. Both the Nikkor & Canon f/2.8 lenses are wonderful & will both give great shots. Fast easier than the Sigmonster. But I wouldn't give it up for anything. I love that lens.
I was very happy to meet the Grebe. Our first meeting. They are very cool looking.
Thanks for taking a look & commenting. Oh, keep an eye out for a used Sigmonster on eBay. They do show up. Mine had not ever left the house. He'd used it once or twice... It was so mint it's amazing. Must have been housed in a closet the whole time.

Thank you Greg,
I can't help thinking of him when I look at these shots. I love the eye of the Grebe as well.

Great Shots Lil And Like Your Copyright. Sorry To Hear About Your Headaches. Very Well Done. Ed
Thank you Ed,
glad you like the copyright. I have Zenfolio & I can use theirs, but it's ugly & ruins the shots. Now, if I could figure to get it smaller in size & to stay where I want it. No problem, but so far it doesn't cooperate with me.
In regards to the headaches. At least we know it's not a tumor or such. So - - I don't take meds cause they make me more sick. And I spend time here, do a lot of photography & take the horses for rides. Then I feel a lot better. The photography - - especially wildlife, gives me life & energy. I think that's part why my husband so supports it.
Beautiful set of shots, Lil. Great exposures and poses. I particularly like the Male Eared Grebe shot, but they are all very good, especially the stilt series.

Thank you Socrate,
Glad you like them. That male Grebe is pretty neat to me. I was thrilled to find him, but the Grebe & the Stilts are my thrill of that day.
