Everything went according to plan and the horses managed to fool me, what did show up was 2 different bachelors not the herd with the colt that I was looking for. These plus some herd photos later.
I was able to find some colts among the 4 different herds I found. As you are going to see this has been a hard year on the horses lots of snow and ice this winter and then no moisture for grass this spring. They are working real hard looking for food. The most grass is in the bottom of the canyons so you have to be willing to work to get to them. The bunch grass under the sagebrush is about the only grass I found that is not dried out.

My favorite colt of the bunch I named him "left behind" He was always trying to keep up with mom and the herd.

Roger...sorry to hear it didn't turn out the way you planned it. But these colts are cute nontheless although a bit skinny.
You're right, the black&white is the cutest, gorgeous eyes...almost looks like a cow

Not turning out like it was planned is very normal for me and wildlife. In fact one of the things I like best about going out in the woods is making sure I am flexible enough to change the plan and do what is necessary to get a chance at the photo.
I agree #5 is also my favorite of this bunch.

Roger,
sad to see how lean they are. The mares which have held on to their foals have been good strong mothers for sure.
Lets hope for lots of food & soon for these lovely horses.
Beautiful shots # 9 being my favorite as it looks what I'd imagine my Destined looked like at that tender age...

I agree, with Lil, They are kinda skinny. Lets hope the Spring rains come soon and the grass gets knee deep. Great study on family life, in the wild. I like the two where the colts are tanking up..

Hi Tim, threw out the forest 76,000 acres there are some small parcels of private property and they have fences up and also many places in the forest have the remains of fences some times the left over wire goes for two or three poles and then is down or gone.
I have been told the owners of the private property have to fence out so the wild horses don't mix with their stock.
