Amazing indeed! This is the first time I see the featherlike structure of spider's facial hair. And I also have some pretty sharp spider shots, with the same lens. Did you focus via the viewfinder, or with LiveView?

No I use the viewfinder. Liveview does help with focus at high mag but found there is a significant delay when actually taking the pic when using flash because the mirror has to go down and up for the preflash. For handheld this means loss of focus. I also used focus stacking on these.
Love the effect in the last shot. IS there pp involved or is the spider moving fast enough (your ss slow enough) to create the sense of motion in this shot, or maybe it's higher iso? Love it!
Amy- the last shot is equivalent to over 10:1 magnification - it shows the effect of diffraction softening at 5:1 even though I was shooting at wide aperture (F5). No PP and no movement

Well, the difrraction creates a neat feel to the shot. Didn't notice that you mentioned this was a crop before.

Think it's just that I have to walk past the car going from the front garden to the back garden and bugs are easy to spot on the car
