For those of you who own the 17-55 and were taken aback by the Photozone summary, Bjorn still rates the 2.8 more highly overall

Not a bad review, but it seems the 18-70 is just a tad better (a lot better considering the price).

IMHO, you can only trust any of these reviews just so far.
They can tell you if a lens is a turkey, but ...
The difference between a lens being "good" or "great" or "really amazing" is just too dependent on your style of shooting.
I like to shoot low light, wide open candids. The slow 16-85 isn't right for me.
Now a 24-70/2.8, HMMmmmmmm...

I was surprised by his statement in this lens review:
"At the widest setting, there is modest barrel distortion but huge amounts of corner darkening (vignetting), the latter needs massive stopping down to clear."

He either got a real bad copy of this lens or I got a real good one. The first thing I noticed with this lens at the widest setting and wide open that I do not see much darkening in the corners (about the same as the 24-70 on the D3)and the sharpness is excellent.

he put some comments up for the 70-200 for fx.

On the D3, however, issues occur with this lens. A certain amount of vignetting when the lens is set wide open is both to be expected and indeed readily visible. But stopping down one or two clicks resolves that issue nicely. The centre sharpness is excellent even on the D3, but the tendency for the corners lacking critical sharpness when the lens is focused towards infinity at its longer end is unexpected and troublesome. For landscapes at 200 mm, you need to stop down way too far to get the corners just barely acceptable, even to f/22 in some cases. I think the covering power of this slim design simply is not adequate for a good performance across the entire FX frame, at least towards the 200 mm setting. For PJ-style work or for studio and portraiture, this flaw is tolerable, but not for landscapes. Nikon really needs to come up with a Mk.II model of this general-purpose zoom lens.
