p.1 #1 · SF Open Ballroom Dance - Critique Appreciated! | |
Hi everyone, this is my first time posting pictures on FM forums, so I want to thank anyone who replies in advance for the time they spend critiquing =] just reading the other posts and looking at everyone else's amazing photographs makes mine pale in comparison, so any and all forms of constructive criticism (especially about the exposure or composition) is greatly appreciated!
These were all shot handheld with a 20D w/ 85mm 1.8 @ ISO 1600, RAW
1. f/1.8 1/250sec
2. f1.8 1/400sec
3. f1.8 1/160sec
4. f1.8 1/250sec
5. f2.8 1/125sec
6. f2.8 1/125sec
7. f2.8 1/125sec
Concerns:
A. AF Mode / Point Selection:
I shot these using single shot AF with the center AF point selected - this is because I felt that the focusing wouldn't be fast enough if I let the camera select the AF point, but looking back, I realize that the composition in a lot of my pictures is quite boring because after focusing w/ the center AF point, I usually don't have enough time to compose the shot, so I just start snapping away
Should I be:
Using another AF Mode (AI servo or AI focus)?
Letting the camera decide the AF point?
B. Exposure Pattern:
I shot 1-4 using Aperture Priority at f/1.8 and I shot 5-7 using Aperture Priority at f/2.8 - I have a bad habit of shooting too open and then wishing I had more DoF, so I changed my aperture between heats, but the strange thing is that I feel like my focus is better at f/1.8 - is it because my shutter speed is faster at 1.8 so the motion is stopped better, or is it just me?
Another thought would be to shoot using shutter priority to stop the motion, but I'm not sure what shutter speed to use - anyone?
Also, these pictures seem a bit overexposed in my opinion. Any tips on metering would be appreciated (Afterwards, I was thinking that I should have done spot metering on faces, but the 20D doesn't have spot metering, any suggestions?)
Finally, a quick comment on the white balance would be greatly appreciated. I'm still fighting myself over whether I should keep the "as shot" color balance or white balance against their shirts, or even use the "auto" WB when developing in RAW
C. Composition
I was standing in the back row, so I had quite a bit of crowd in front of me. I have a lot of pictures with other people's heads/other things in the bottom of the frame (like that "4" sticking out like a sore thumb in pictures 2 and 6 here) any tips on getting around this?
Once again, thanks in advance for any and all comments, I really appreciate it!
