Further to Pablo's thread featuring the beauty dish lighting full length fashion work, here's another example. All shot with dish up high and slightly right, model against white seamless. The last shot also has a silver reflector at her waist.

My God when did over exposed and poorly color balanced images become good ones? Can you day blown out??
have you flipped through a fashion mag in the last decade?
regardless, the agency who paid me to shoot her loved the whole shoot, and is sending me more models next week. i guess they'll have to be subject to my poor lighting and colour control :-)
These are technically well-lit images but what breaks it for me is the lack of contrast between the face, skin, and background. His site explains it quite nicely: http://super.nova.org/DPR/ It all just depends on what you're using it for. If it was complimented by a brightly-colored product shot in a magazine spread, I'd probably feel different since there'd be something for my eye to latch on to, but in their current state it's a bit harder, with the exception of #3, which I really like.
I quite like the effect / style. The photographs are reminiscent of 50's and 60's fashion photos often used on product packaging such as hair dyes and leggings.
As for Chuck Gardner, I have read a lot of his articles in the past. He seem to know his stuff and few techniques he suggested worked well for me.
Anyone can call anything art and someone will be attracted to anything, but I think that even if one desired this effect, a far more refined version could be attained if more attention was paid to lighting, exposure, etc. These seem to have been snapped quickly with little attention to detail. Just having an eye is not enough. You need to be able to use the tools as well. If these shots were shown side by side with shots displaying the same "look" but taken with better technique, I think it would be clear how much better these could be.
Further - I think your assertion that this is fashion work that pleased is disingenuous. Fashion photos would show the clothes. This kind of depiction even if for the sake of art would not be tolerated since the goal is to sell clothes. You also say you are being sent more models to shoot. Is this fashion work or not? You would say you were being sent more clothes to shoot if it was fashion.

true. all of this, and anything really, is subjective.

would LOVE to hear about more refined techniques. educate me, please :-)
we shot 6 looks in 3 hours...not exactly "snapped quickly", but what do i know.

again, i implore you to fill me in...show me some samples.

i BEG you to go find the latest copy of Italian Vogue and then tell me about "show the clothes" for fashion photos. remember, i didn't say "catalog".
You also say you are being sent more models to shoot. Is this fashion work or not? You would say you were being sent more clothes to shoot if it was fashion.
agencies supply models to the fashion industry. i supply the agency with photos of their models in fashion so that they can market their product. simple.
cheers mate, ur good and you know it. Love the post processing there, something different for a change. I'll buy you a beer if you'll show me how the PP is done -_^
