Step 1 - Have both your camera and the flash mounted and ON
Step 2 - Go into the camera menu to the wrench icon
Step 3 - Scroll to Flash control and hit the Set button
Step 4 - Scroll to External Flash func. setting
Step 5 - Scroll to Shutter sync. Hit Set and change to 2nd curtain
Step 6 - Hit Set and you're done

Hi,
I hope you understand what I mean by grey out. That means its not an option for you to select anything. I know what are you talking about but the 40D will not allow me to choose it at all. And I tried 3 580EX on the 40D and it still not working. I know I can use the custom function on the flash itself but its not as convinence when I am shooting wedding. But Thanks for your input.

I prefer to use the buttons on the flash. I have the 580ex2 which is different, but if you look at the manual you'll see how to set it for 2nd curtain.

Are you in a creative mode that doesn't allow the flash settings to be changed?

^I agree with above, also do you have any weird CFs enabled?

lol 580EXII is so much simplier, you just press a button

I have the 580 and the II. On the 580, I just press the High Speed Synch/ Second Curtain button and it cycles through HSS/2nd curtain/ nothing. Does this not work on the 40D?

Sorry, didn't read through the whole post. I think deewaltguy is correct, but for the issue you are having with the camera body not being able to change it, I have no clue what it can be.

I think it may be your Custom Functions on the body

My 40D and 550ex has the same problem. Maybe it is a Cf that is the culprit, but I have yet to find it.

Just checked and the 40D acts the same way with my 430ex as well.

If anybody has any insight we would greatly appreciate it.

OK I just got home and tried it with my 40D and 580EX (1). You're right, and it doesn't work. I can set all the stuff on the flash, but not through the camera.

I can't access the flash custom function menu through the camera at all. It just says "This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off."

The manual says it's compatible with all EX series flashes, so this does seem like a bug somewhere. Any other clues?

I'm relatively sure that the camera control feature only works with 580 II, not the 580. That was one of the enhancements that was added to the II. I have the 40D and 580 - in manual mode with no CFs on the flash on, my second curtain option is greyed out. I also get the "this menu cannot be displayed". With the older 580, you get a few controls (FEC and switching between evaluative and average), but that's it. So there is you all EX flashes - just limited.

Am I imagining things, or could we do this on the 20D? I don't have mine any more so I can't verify that.

Yes, that's the difference. The 40D manual says that "The menu for the external Speedlight will only be applicable for EX-series Speedlights whose functions can be set with the camera." The 580EX II can, the 580EX can't. The first camera that could set these functions was the 1DMkIII, I think.

The posts suggesting this is an in-camera CF on the 40D seems correct. Just out of curiosity, why would you go through all those in-camera machinations instead of hitting the button on the back of the flash?

It is my understanding that if I could set the behavior in-camera, then any compatible flash would function as I intended (ie, second-curtain) when mounted on the camera.

If this is not correct, someone please correct me.
