p.1 #1 · Young Maiko

This photo was literally "plundered" inside of a restaurant in kyoto.
Although may not be technically perfect is so rare to find a true maiko that I am still really proud...

Please post your comments & Critics and thanks for taking a look.

If that was all you could get then well done - you got it. Not all opportunities can be prepared for in advance.

It would look better if you cropped just near her right arm to remove annoying background highlights (lamp and door), and a bit off the right too. Also of course it would have been better to have the front of her face lit instead of the side.

So why didn't you happen to have a multiple flash system set up ready and waiting ? Sounds like poor planning to me

For those of us culturally impaired, what is a "maiko"?

Thanks,

What is a Maiko?

The word Maiko literally translates to "dancing child" (mai = dance, ko = child), but is also referred to as "dancing girl". A Maiko is an apprentice Geisha who must must undergo a period of training that generally takes 5 years, where she learns the various "gei" (arts) such as dancing, singing, music etc before she becomes a Geisha.

Nick I actually like this image a lot and the coy side of her you caught here.
I also am not a believer on multiple flashes, but I would agree that a cleaner
background is always better (that said I won't be a Nazist about it, being
that such is not always possible and intevening in an heavy handed way
may alter the delicate balance shown, or be culturally just plain rude).

Btw, there is nothing wrong w/ your light here at all !!! Its not a situation
of poor planning but one of wilful rudeness on the part of the poster.
