I loved this cool formation that is part of the "Point of Arches" at Shi Shi Beach in the remote NW corner of Washigton state. The tide was so low that I could walk thru 1/2 of the various sea stacks that are usually covered with water. I found this Ochre starfish hanging out and waiting for the tide to come back in All his family is yelling at him to get out of the open because some bird might get him for lunch.....

That's awesome composition. Wish the highlights in general, on the rocks in particular were better controlled - probably very hard to do given the stark contrast between the shade and the sunny part of the image.
Exceptional balance on this one, John. The lonely sunstar locks the foreground in wonderfully. The viewer has a wonderful path back to that lovely blue sky. Really....really nice comp.
A starfish hangout-what a great find! You put the odd starfish in exactly the right spot in the frame. He's the star of the show against the silvery-blue of the water.
Maybe he's coming in, not going out. How would we tell?

Love the comp. I don't know if you do any black and white (I dont think I've seen you post any) but this one might do well converted, and the color painted back into the starfish. Of course it would really compromise the realisticness (new word for wikipedia)
I really like this photo. Nice contrast between the warm sky and cold sea. Nice tonal range. Hope I don't sound to wierd or something but the star fish here is called an ochre star. The sun starfish have about 24 legs. Great photo. Ron
Taz, thanks for that clarification - I saw a sun starfish at Shi Shi beach as well. He was trapped in a small tide pool until the tide came back. The most amazing thing about this sun starfish was that it moved quite quickly and if I touched one of it's legs, the leg moved slowly out of the water in reaction to my touch. It moved so much faster than a regular ochre starfish.
