I have two 5Ds. One of them had the mirror fall out on me a couple weeks ago. It's probably in the 80k shutter range. I sent it to Canon NJ and got it back within a week fixed, cleaned, adjusted and upgraded fw (1.1.1) - no charge.
The mirror fell out of my 5D. Canon fixed it for free (it was out of warranty) and overnighted it back to me. The net cost to me was 4 days without my camera and cost for shipping it to them.
I live in Hawaii and have had my 5d for a little more than a year. Love the camera but did just have the mirror fall out during a wedding shoot this past weekend. Sending the camera in to Canon tomorrow and hope they will repair the unit free of charge. Will keep you all posted.
I 'modified' with a power tool the mirror in my Nov 2005 copy, and it has taken many hundreds of thousands of images since, to the extent that the shutter imploded and had to be replaced. It still keeps going, loyally, even with a hacked mirror. I am personally aware of 6 other units of various ages belonging to family, friends and colleagues which have had no problems with mirrors dislodging. This thread is the first time I have heard of this problem and I have been on the fora a lot since before the 5D was released to market.
I have two 5d's and both have had their mirrors come off. I live in Hawaii one body was 14 months old around 30,000 - 40,000 clicks. The other body was about 16 months old with around 40,000 clicks. Not sure what the cause is as one body has a Canon 24-70mmL mounted about 95% of the time other than that it would be a 50mmL or 70-200mmL. I do love the camera though.
I live in the tropics and the mirror dropped off my 5D after about 18 months of ownership.
Canon NY replaced the mirror box, adjusted the auto focus, cleaned it, turned it around in 4 days and prepaid the air freight back to me, all for N/C. Great service.
I had mine just fall out during a wedding....hot day, southern california...not a "hot humid" location..........I bought the camera used but in excellent condition....from this Forum.
I got it home that night, super glues it back in, and has worked like a champ now for 3 months..........it's a wait and see deal.

I have heard that the problems with the mirrors "falling out" have been with locations that have very high humidity.
The adhesive that Canon uses fails under this occasion.
I think Canon knows about this problem, but the only way to be sure would be to call them directly.
I have had my 5D since they were released, and have had no problems. The humidity in Montana usually is quite low, though, usually from 15% to 60%.

Yeah I occasionally see posts about mirror falling out from Hong Kong forums.
Canon HK will fix your 5D's mirror for free if it's under warranty
Don't know if it applies to all or a number of 5Ds, but apparently the glue used to fix the mirror is not up to spec, as Leethal said. Tropical conditions of heat and humidity are usually required for it to loosen. We had a member on here to whom it happened in Cochin, India and I have heard of incidences in Indonesia, Bahrain and Carribean.
In all instance that I have heard of, Canon fixed it for free without a word or a flinch, warranty or no warranty.
I had one 5D fail on me with the mirror falling off. It actually comes apart (the mirror itself) from the reflex frame.
I'd heard about it prior only in brief, being an issue with earlier release camera's before the camera fault was known. It was well out of service period however (by about 8 months) when it came up, so that was over one and a half years of working with it from Europe (hot summer), Australia (tropics where I live, and south occasionally) and winter and summer in Japan (failed while in Japan).
The night it failed, was a fireworks night, and I didn't have the tripod, so I was braced with my finger constantly on the button, just shooting, not fussed but was asked to, so I did. Anyway, on maybe the 2000th something capture, it came up with an error 99 once, I clicked it off then on again, worked for about three more shots, but sounded very unusual, then error 99 again. I went to tip the camera down and look at the error, and I heard the clunk.
Pulled the lens off, didn't immediately notice it, then saw it was ascew, and realised I'd busted it.
Service repaired it for free in japan, so it's not like they didn't know.
While it was being service, I went and bought a new 5D to replace it for the trip. Sold the old one when I got back to Australia for about the same price I bought it for.
Just a side note, I suspect I had less then 20,000 shutter actuations in total.
I forgot to post is my last comment that yes Canon did fix it at no cost other then shipping to them and the wait time about 10 days total from ship to receive. I just got my second body back and it seems they have changed the shutter and adjusted body back to spec.
Mine fell out yesterday.... central Florida. This is how I came upon this thread. What now? I will call canon and see if they can repair it for free. I hate the idea of fixing it myself and screwing it up. The camera is out of warranty.
If it's the same problem (litterally the reflective surface comes away) then they likely will fix it for free, and if they argue about it, say that such a failure has been reported en-mass, and they should be repairing it free.
Very early ones had dust in the Pentaprism. Mine was fixed in less than a week at no charge. This was all several years ago. No problem that I know of with current production.
