Mirror problem? I have a 5d and love it; I was unaware of any problems with the mirror. I have heard of some dust problems and experienced that, but what is the mirror problem to which you refer?

A friend of mine had his focusing screen fall out of his 5D. He put it back but now it's all scratched and he has to buy a new one (obviously).

If you look, I'm sure you can find someone to say that there is a problem with any component of any camera, no matter how long it has been manufactured or how well it is selling.

The mirror problem you are referring to is most likely for those who use "exotic" glass, such as Zeiss, Leica, Olympus etc with adapters which can recess far enough into the body to hit the mirror. If you stick with standard EF lenses, or the exotics that are known to work you won't have any problems. I'm not sure it's even fair to call it a problem as the 5D wasn't designed for use with those lenses.

I have heard a few whose mirror has fallen off. But in all cases, Canon has fixed it for free even though their camera were out of warranty...

I personally only know 2 guys with 5D's, and both have had the mirror fall off. Small sample size, I know, but it seems like a real issue. Wouldn't let that stop me from owning one, though.

OK, guess we need a tie-breaker. Anyone? As I said, mirror issue, or not, don't let that stop you from getting such a great camera. One guy I know reattached the mirror with super-glue.

I bought a 5D in April 2006. Reflex mirror still works fine. I just can't seem to figure out how to engage ECF...

Had mine for over a year and it has been an eventful one for the 5D. Dropped in a river and been totally submerged, had a pint of lager poured over it (twice) and been dropped down the stairs. Never had a problem and its going so well that I'm buying a second one.

Hope that helps

Ken

It happens once in a while to people but usually they're in hotter climates. My 5D is going on 3 years old with no problems and over 16k clicks.

I have heard that the problems with the mirrors "falling out" have been with locations that have very high humidity.
The adhesive that Canon uses fails under this occasion.
I think Canon knows about this problem, but the only way to be sure would be to call them directly.
I have had my 5D since they were released, and have had no problems. The humidity in Montana usually is quite low, though, usually from 15% to 60%.
