I don't know how FM will feel about this, but I think it important.
I just found out today that NASA is planning to develop 200 acres of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge for a commercial facility. See here.
Well, this is a Nature & Wildlife forum so I would imagine some of us may not approve of this idea of NASA's. So I've posted the story on Care2.com here - please consider noting the story so it makes Front Page & more people will know.
I have also started a petition here which I plan to send to NASA, name of recipient on petition. As well as other people who will have a say on this issue in Florida.
Please consider signing this petition. Many of us rely on these areas for photography of wildlife. Can we really allow NASA to destroy habitat for so much wildlife? In my book - No. We can stand up & say No - - for our children, the welfare of the planet & for future photography.
I have added one of my shots taken a Bolsa Chica a wildlife refuge here in the Los Angeles area to the petition & will do so here as well so hopefully I won't be breaking too many rules.
Lil, Thanks for posting, I was completely unaware of this proposal and have just finished my email to them giving my objections to their plans. This is one of the premier places in the area for viewing Waterfowl and Wading birds of all types as well as the Bald Eagle, Florida Scrub Jay and many other birds and animals. I have been there numerous times and would hate to think about losing it to NASA.

Thank you Grant, I'm glad. I found it on another board, posted it on care2.com & then started the petition. It now has 20 signatures & I would love to see it get more so I hope people here & on the other board along with the care2.com network sign for all their worth.
Glad this has not upset anyone... & thanks for signing Grant

I hope no one minds me bumping this - - it's not for me. It's for Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge & us trying to stop NASA's advancement into Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. More signatures on the petition are needed so please consider supporting those of us who have signed....
Its an uphill fight but worth every foot you get. I am fighting something here in the east all th time be it eagles or horseshoe crabs. Good for you, roll the ball
Lou
PS I just found out where I bought my house in Sandwich Ma. on Cape Cod that being it is the highest elevation on the Cape they have one of those stations that monitors for things heading back to earth like the one they claim they just shot down. God I live in a high risk zone as it should be a prime target area House foe sale by owner

Don't worry, Lou, I'm sure all your Eagles will team up and run to Cape Cod to protect you.
Praiseworthy initiative, Lil Judd. I'm in, and living in Florida means a lot to me. I already knew about it from the local news, and I was wondering what I could do about it.

Don't ever let them win Lou. You stick to your guns.
I can't just stand by & ignore stuff like this. I can only do so much from Los Angeles - - but I sure can stir things up a tad.

Socrate - - signing is one thing. Going to those meetings is another. I know an online friend went to the first one. NASA won't say anything about how many (if any) new jobs will be created. They won't say how many more launches - - they won't say anything. They just want to build & destroy habitat. Go to the next meeting & ask some hard questions. Corner them so people see what's going on & that NASA really won't give any answers.
184 signatures in three or four days. Folks more are needed - - please sign. I've left it open to the whole planet to sign. This actually concerns us all...
Lil
p.s. Socrate - - thank you for signing it means a lot to me.....
