p.1 #1 · Eagles

Shot these two photos today at Pittsburgh's National Aviary. On both, I like the expression. Comments and critiques welcome.

The first shot is quite unique because of the expression. Bald eagles usually have a scowl look to them, the first shot looks almost inquisitive. Very unique.

Mary Beth,

Like the expressions on these as well. Reminds me of a 12 year old kid who is just exploring the world without preconceptions. Like those kind of people.

Prefer #1 to #3 but can see why you tried the darkening.

Nice captures.

I tried the darkening because I learned a valuable lesson. I shot these at the National Aviary about 10:30 a.m., and all the bird are behind glass. I used a polarizing filter, but still got reflections, no matter where I stood. The lesson I learned is to visit The Aviary when it's cloudy or overcast.

Does anyone have tips about using a polarizing filter in this situation. I twisted and turned it, but still had reflections. My goal is tack sharp, and was somewhat disappointed.

On the other hand, this is the first time I used RAW, and I'm delighted. My RAW question is this: when I upload to Adobe Elements 5.0, it seems that appropriate settings are suggestioned for RAW photos. I had to then open into full edit and change them.

Anyhow, thanks for your comments. Much appreciated.

Can't speak to Elements 5.0 nor a polarizing filter. I have neither.

Within Photoshop CS2 I can 'select' parts of the image and do what I want to them. In your images I would have darkened the eagle a bit and done more with the background. If you can do this with Elements then try and see how you like the resulting image.
